CAMP CABIN TAKES A HIT

December 8, 2016

The cold winter winds and icy snow and rain sometimes play havoc at Camp Howard.  Fortunately we do not have a lot to complain about but about every 5 years a cabin comes in contact with a falling tree.  During my 20 years with the camp all of the destruction has taken place in Aldergrove unit (built in 1995).

A tree fell during the night and pretty much destroyed a Greenwood cabin, St. John the Apostle.  This unit was built in 1955 making it the second unit built at Camp Howard after the original Fircrest Unit built in 1953.  The tree pretty much had its way with the cabin and crushed  one side of the cabin entirely opening the cabin and destroying the bunks, roof, floor, pylons, windows and heating system!

What next?  Generally we have been able to repair the cabins that have been hit but this one is probably a total loss.  We will see.  The good news is that this is the one unit that has not been re-roofed yet!  How’s that for finding the sunny side?  And most importantly, no one was at the camp as is our practice during times of high winds.

Last Images of Camp Howard Summer Camping Season

After dinner each night at Camp Howard, Old Glory is lowered and cabins take turns with the honor.  Campers learn to address the flag, proper protocols and folding the flag.  The flag was lowered the last time by the kids on Thursday night.  On Friday, after the busses head back to town, the camp staff lower the flag.  It is raised each morning again by camper groups with the intent of each cabin having the opportunity to participate.  This time honored tradition is an important part of the camping experience at Camp Howard.

Correction to Note

The 100 Foot SLIP and SLIDE was replaced session 5 NOT the Zip Line! 🙂

Camp Howard Completes 63rd Season

SPECTACULAR!  Another great camping season is in the books!  “Change” was the theme of the 2016 season and there was a lot of it.  A big Swing and zip line was added for the older kids.  Laser tag was a new program for 11 year olds and up.  A Cougar Award was handed out to a camper in every cabin every week!  No exceptions!  Programming was changed to allow for two choices per session.  FOB was moved to the afternoon when the kids are really tired instead of after lunch.  Tshirt sales were through the roof with the new cougar design.  The 100 foot SLIP AND SLIDE had to be replaced during session 5 due to the use it got!  Awesome!  Family Camp sold out and was a blast with Jason Kidd, Jolie Abraham Phanton and Heather Wycoff!  Fishing Camp practically fished the pond empty!  Lots of trout was eaten during the summer by avid fisherkids!

Stay tuned for a series of articles which will go into various aspects of the completed season!  Thanks for watching!

Valley Catholic Clinches 8 Boys CYO BXB Title

Valley Catholic and St. Anthony played a very enjoyable game for the CYO 2016 8th Grade Boys Basketball Title.  Valley Catholic ended the third quarter with a 16 point lead.  By the end of the game there was a four point difference and a lot of excitement and turmoil depending on which team you were following at any given moment!

With 25 seconds left in the game, it could have gone either direction as St. Anthony crept within 3.  Andy Alfieri sunk 2 crucial shots under pressure to put the Valiants ahead 52 to 46.  He added two more points immediately on another foul by St. Anthony.

Holy Trinity 3-Peat 7th Grade Boys

The Holy Trinity vs St. Anthony 7th Grade Boys basketball game began with a lot of back and forth action and several lead changes.

The Holy Trinity Fan Club is a force to be reckoned with!  A sea of Red, clever signs with slogans and commitment to their teams!  They are a presence and are commended for their spirit!

The spirit of the Holy Trinity Fan club was lit at the end of the third and beginning of fourth quarters in the game when #1, James Lang lead a scoring charge.  Number 24, Charles Pickard was a force through out the game, able to score from  anywhere near the basket whenever the ball was fed to him.

Lots of talent on both teams! A great game to watch.

St. Clare 6 Girls win CYO Hoop Title 2016

Fast paced action on the court described the play of the sixth grade girls at work in the championship basketball tournament game at Valley Catholic School.  Lots of shots while working out the jitters produced a 4-4 score at the end of the first quarter.

Lots of traveling on both teams caused multiple turnovers.  Missed layups was another theme.  Good free throw shooting and well taught fundamentals will evolve into some great teams as these girls develop skills and mature.

Sherwood established a consistent 8 – 10 point lead in the fourth quarter.

FINAL 32 – 21 St. Francis (Sherwood)

6 Girls City 2016 1st St. Francis, Sherwood

St. Francis (Sherwood) CYO Girls 6th Grade BXB Team won the City Championships March 13, 2016 at Valley Catholic High School.

CYO 5th Grade Boys City Championship a Barnburner

What looked to be a slow moving game in the beginning with a 20 – 14 margin at half time turned into an exciting contest with a score of 22-22 at the third quarter!  St. Clare couldn’t miss in the first half and St. Pius had the hot shots in the third quarter outscoring St. Clare 7 to 2.

With 2 minutes to go and St. Pius X in a situation of “must foul” to have a chance, St. Clare pulled away by 7.  Great game to watch.
