CYO Cadet Girls 800 Grant Girls 1 and 2, St. John Fisher 1, 2 and 3

The headline says it all!  Molly and Paige Grant finished first and second to win the Cub girls 800 meter Run at the CYO Meet of Champions May 20 & 21 at Jesuit High School.  Less than a second separated both their seed times and their winning times.  The Grant girls finish their CYO career with the conclusion of the Meet of Champions and leave behind some great memories for those who watched them through the years.

CYO Roadrunner Championships Today

CYO Track and Field Championships for third and fourth graders will take place today in two regional meets.  One will be at La Salle Catholic College Preparatory in Milwaukie and the other at Valley Catholic School in Beaverton.  The top eight times, distances, jumps, throws and puts will be determined at the conclusion of each meet and those individuals will be invited to the Meet of Champions the following weekend to participate for the championship.

The Roadrunner Championships, for me, are exciting because we see individuals start to emerge as future potential notables in their events.  There were two outstanding record setting performances in 2016 at the Roadrunner event.  Nina Stecher from Valley Catholic set a new record in the 400 Meter with a time of 1:09.46.  Juliana Peters from St. Anthony set a new CYO record in the 800 with a time of 2:39.81.

See you at the meets!

Parkes Kendrick, CYO Star, University of Portland Valedictorian

MAY 12, 2017 PORTLAND,  OR

IMG_2695

Parkes Kendrick ran for the Madeleine CYO Club while in grade school and left her mark on CYO with her amazing racing skills!  Anyone who is a regular at CYO Track and Field will know the name, Parkes Kendrick.

I was so happy to see Parkes was the University of Portland Valedictorian chosen to talk at commencement last week when I attended the exercises to support our graduating Sisters and to watch Sr. Charlene receive her award.

I read up on what Parkes had done since her days at CYO and found in high school she was in contention for two state championships the same season on the same day! Similarly, at the University of Portland, she was a finalist for the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship and had to give up her participation in the NCAA Cross Country Championships because the two conflicted!

Parkes is an extraordinary young woman who leaves an impression.  It is obvious, reading about her in cyber space that she has the potential to leave a big mark in our world. Congratulation, Parkes, on all you have achieved these past twenty some years! We are very proud of you. #sistersblogs  #cyocamphoward

Save the Last Dance for Me

Several years ago I visited a seventh and eighth grade dance put on by a public agency to see what it looked like.  I was amazed at the lack of supervision and decided there and then that we needed to put on some dances to give families a choice.  We started the CYO dances at Oaks Park around 2004.  Mary Jane Weigel put on the early dances and did a good job of getting them started.

Maryann and Bryan Stewart have been organizing the CYO Dances for over ten years. They do a great job of it as well.  Working with seventh and eighth graders is a lot of fun as they are a very special age group. The dances are not without issues as one would expect working with this age group.  The youngsters are developing into young teens who make mistakes and we view it as our mission to help them correct the mistake and learn from it.

Maryann and Bryan have raised four children of their own and have a good handle on our Catholic Christian expectations and do a great job of helping the kids.  We are also thankful for the committment of our DJ Tom Farley who continues to provide outstanding DJ services. As the last dance of the year approaches this May 12, CYO will say goodbye to the 8th graders and welcome the 6th graders.

As we look to the 2017-18 Dance season, Bryan, MaryAnn and I have met and assessed our procedures to ensure that we are being faithful to our mission.  Dress code will be more strictly enforced, online registration will be required and the price of the dances will increase to keep up with the costs passed along to CYO.  As we finalize our plans, we will make them known to our participants and parents. We offer Catholic organizations the opportunity to do the supervision for us and in return, we pay their group $500. for their 3 hour effort.  If your group is interested in chaperoning, please contact the CYO/Camp Howard office.

CYO Track & Field Week 2 Photo Gallery

APRIL 22, 2017 CYO TRACK & FIELD –

CYO Track & Field is GREAT because it is a very active sport with a lot of choices for kids. Throwing, jumping, putting, running, sprinting, you name it, there is something for everyone!  This year nearly 1900 kids signed up for CYO Track & Field.  Four meets per Saturday bringing kids from all over the greater Portland area to compete with one another is a lot of fun. #sistersblogs #cyocamphoward
