The cold winter winds and icy snow and rain sometimes play havoc at Camp Howard.  Fortunately we do not have a lot to complain about but about every 5 years a cabin comes in contact with a falling tree.  During my 20 years with the camp all of the destruction has taken place in Aldergrove unit (built in 1995).

A tree fell during the night and pretty much destroyed a Greenwood cabin, St. John the Apostle.  This unit was built in 1955 making it the second unit built at Camp Howard after the original Fircrest Unit built in 1953.  The tree pretty much had its way with the cabin and crushed  one side of the cabin entirely opening the cabin and destroying the bunks, roof, floor, pylons, windows and heating system!

What next?  Generally we have been able to repair the cabins that have been hit but this one is probably a total loss.  We will see.  The good news is that this is the one unit that has not been re-roofed yet!  How’s that for finding the sunny side?  And most importantly, no one was at the camp as is our practice during times of high winds.

CYO Boys Third Grade Basketball Final

A 30 second comeback sparked a barnstormer of a finish in the 3rd grade boys Championship game as the Madeleine team scored 7 points in under a minute.  They came within 3 points with 20 seconds left in the game but fouling to buy time resulted in a 4 point loss to St. John the Baptist.

FINAL: St. John the Baptist 27

CYO 3rd Grade Girls City Championship 2016

Christ the King (Milwaukie, OR) and the Madeleine School (Portland, OR) made their way to the big dance Saturday March 5th to compete in the CYO CITY Championship.

Third Grade Basketball is all about dribbling the ball and running… all while controlling the ball and not traveling… while the coaches yell out the play by play for their teams to keep them focused on what they should be doing… while capturing the ball from the other team and wrestling it away then “heaving” a high in the air shot as someone catches it, surprised and shuffles around not quite always sure what to do next.  Bonus is when those baskets connect.

First basket recorded in the second quarter matched by the other team within 30 seconds.  Both teams were then off to the races!

FINAL: Christ the King 21 Madeleine 10 – CONGRATULATIONS to both teams for a fun game to watch.
