Sacramento Here We Come!

Reminder…Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon (about 40 of us) are headed to Sacramento to see the exhibit on the “History of Religious Women in America!”  This show was created by the Smithsonian Institute in Washington D.C. and the closest it gets to Portland is Sacramento!

This adventure is very exciting and one that will be written up in the Archives of the Sisters for sure!  It is the cap of the Sisters 125th Jubilee anniversary this year and will be a great memory for those who take part.  Join me this weekend as I blog our adventures!  And please leave comments! 🙂

Now to the practical side of things…

ü  Our hotel has a swimming pool!

ü  Forecast for Saturday: high of 84 and low of 63.

ü  Sr. Rita has snacks for us.  She will also ask for a bowl of tuna fish to be prepared on Thursday so we can make sandwiches either Thursday evening or Friday morning.

ü  Kelly (our tour arranger) is not only providing snacks and water, but she is also treating us to cinnamon rolls, coffee/tea at “Heaven on Earth” in Azalea, OR.

ü  Bring your own water bottles to refill/coffee mugs.

ü  Remember that we cannot take fruit into California – so pack your lunch accordingly.

ü  We will not stop for lunch (lunch on the bus) but we will stop for lunch/dinner on the return trip.

10:00             Rest stop near Eugene

11:30             Stop at Roseburg to pick up Barbara Green

(exit 127 – Home Depot parking lot)

12:30             Stop at Heaven on Earth Restaurant (exit 86) for coffee, tea, and cinnamon rolls –( thanks to Kelly)

2:30 p.m.     Pick up Sr. Patricia Marie at McDonald’s on Biddle

5:00 p.m.     Stop in Redding, CA, for dinner

8:30 p.m.     Arrival in Sacrament (Best Western Sutter House)

Update of “Heating the Pool” at Camp Howard

Heating the pool is progressing nicely now that we seem to be past the snow!  The pad has been prepared for pouring a concrete slab which will take place late this week or early next week.  Heaters and fixtures have been ordered and the technicians are on top of having the pool ready to go well before camp begins.

The pool gets covered with a “rhino cover” at the end of the summer and it is removed in late spring.  It will be removed a little earlier this year to prep for the heating process.  Everyone is excited about the pool getting a heater – especially me.  I am excited about it because it has been the number one complaint of kids for the past 15 years.  Thanks to the Champions of Faith fundraising Dinner this past fall, we are now financially able to do it.

Seton Catholic School Play, SSMO trip by Chartered bus to Sacramento…exciting week ahead!

This week will be an exciting week for me.  Life at CYO and Camp Howard is exciting in itself.

What am I looking forward to?  Outside of CYO I am looking forward to the Seton High School Play “You Can’t Take it With You” starring, Madeline Hunter and co-starring, Cheyenne Cunning!  The play opens Friday night at St. James in Vancouver and will play on Saturday and Sunday as well.  The school could use your support so consider checking it out.  Seton High School is a new Catholic High School as of 2009.

We have our Spring AD meeting on Wednesday night.  This meeting will be filled with a lot of interesting information for CYO Athletic Directors for the coming 2012-13 year.

On Friday I will leave town for Sacramento, CA. joining some 40 Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon to travel in a chartered bus to see the Smithsonian Museum’s  “Women in Spirit” – the history of Religious LIfe in America.  I am looking forward to this trip because it caps our 125th anniversary as a religious community.  It is the first time in my 30 years as a Sister that we have done anything like this as a community of Sisters.

I will be blogging about the trip from the bus and from Sacrament so stay tuned.

John Canzano Writes About CYO Trackmeet

Mark Lee is the Director of CYO Track and Field in the Greater Portland area.  He has a fantastic group of individuals who serve on his Commission and a wonderful group of talented individuals who coach the nearly 25 track and field teams in the Metro area including Clark County, Washington.

Six faculty and 94 students from Blanchet Catholic School in Salem, Oregon came to Camp Howard today to give a day of service to the camp.  They were like a miniature army accomplishing things that would have taken the camp several weeks to do!  The goal was to continue the branch and limb pick up from three places in the camp and haul the refuse to a pile where it will e recycled into chips.  The camp is looking very clean on the forest floor thanks to the efforts of the camp staff and work groups like Blanchet Catholic School who volunteer to make a day of it!  Thank you so much, Blanchet 7th and 8th graders for a job well done!

Upcoming at CYO/Camp Howard

These next few days I will be unveiling some improvements at Camp Howard to look forward to.  I will show you the progress on heating the pool AND what we did at the dining room!  We will also be taking you on a work party at the camp so you can see how work parties benefit the camp.  Blanchett High School students will be joining us on Friday at the camp.  Karen has asked me to come up and help drive so I will take you along with me.  Sound like fun?  I can assure you it will be so stay tuned!

CYO Dance DJ Tom Farley – Did you see this? How Fantastic!

Tom Farley does all of the CYO Dances every month at Oaks Park for CYO 7th and 8th graders.  He does a great job for CYO and we are really proud to share this news clip on Tom.

Bryan and MaryAnn Stewart, the CYO Middle School Dance Coordinators have worked with Tom Farley, the CYO DJ, for the past 7 years and have this to say about Tom: “In working with Tom for the past 7 years at the CYO Middle School Dances we have come to appreciate his skill as a DJ. Tom has been extremely helpful ensuring our mission of offering a safe, fun and appropriate environment for  several hundred youth who attend each of the dances.  We recently saw Tom featured as a Community Hero on KATU news. It was evident that Tom uses his position of a DJ as a mission showing dignity and respect to all that he works with.  We are honored to work with such a wonderful individual, who clearly shares our mission and values here at CYO/Camp Howard!”

CYO Portland meets CYO Seattle

We had a wonderful day at Camp Howard meeting with the leadership of the Seattle CYO and Camps programs.  We exchanged information about our organizations and learned a lot about each other. In many ways we are very similar and in many ways we are different.  We explored those similarities and differences through out the day and then ended with dinner on the way home from camp.  

I am personally looking forward to going to Seattle and visiting their camps this summer.  I am particularly interested in their horse camp and high school camp.  What do you think?
