Specialty campers who signed up for Target Sports get to experience a variety of shooting sports for two hours a day during their week of camp. Archery, Paintball, BB guns and Trap Shooting are the offerings this year for the camp. The youngsters were delighted by the trap shooting today as each and every one of them learned to aim, load, and fire their 12 gauge shotgun at the moving target (clay disk). Every student shot the target several times and had a successful outing of Trap shooting.
Camp Howard Target Sport Director, JP Fogarty (left) and Sister Krista von Borstel, (not pictured) team taught the class today.
Leonardo and his wife, Patty Defilippis from Battleground, WA got their start in religious theme presentations in Beaverton, OR around 1981. Leonardo, Patty and I have “grown up” together over the years. I cannot tell you how proud I am of them for the wonderful work they do.
I would encourage you to become familiar with them if you are not and take advantage of this fantastic local talent. They travel all over the world with their productions. If you are able to send a donation their way, it would be money well spent. I hope you will also take time to take in one of their live drama presentations.

Star Deck tower at Camp Howard is rebuilt July 2013 by Schommer and Sons Construction Company. Pictured here is the nearly complete tower with side rails being added around the top of the platform and down the stairs.
The STAR DECK has always been a popular feature at Camp Howard with campers. It was built in 1985 by the Knights of Columbus from Gresham. After several years of service the tower had to be removed for safety purposes. Sr. Krista talked to Schommer and Sons about a redesign of the tower moving the stairs to the side which would give the tower a full unobstructed floor. The tower was redesigned and rebuilt this spring. Special thanks to Craig Schommer, Steve Schommer and the construction crew at Schommer and Sons.
If you haven’t been to Camp Howard in the past 10 years it would be worth your while to save the date, July 20th 2013 from 1:00 until 4:00 and come up and check out the camp. The camp staff and friends would like to have the opportunity to show you one of the treasures donated to the youth of the Pacific Northwest.
Country western band COUNTRYFIED will be playing on the main field known as Horton field (named for the donors of the property) from 1:00 until 4:00.
Each of the CYO sports is made up of a CYO Sport Director, Sport Commission, and Commission Chair. Mark Lee is the CYO Track and Field Director, Paul Boileau is the Track Commission Chair and six individuals sit on the Commission. Additionally, each of the Clubs that participate in CYO track and field have several coaches.
We are very blessed at CYO to have so many outstanding individuals helping produce the track and field regular season meets and the end of season Championship events for third through eighth grade participants.
These pictures were taken at the 2013 Coaches meeting prior to the final day of competition. Who do you recognize?
The Portland CYO/Camp Howard Staff and the Seattle CYO and Camp Staffs gathered at Camp Howard on April 29th for the third meeting between the groups. The purpose of the meetings is to compare notes on various topics, to find better ways to accomplish tasks, learn from one another and build relationship.
Some outcomes from these meetings have been the introduction of paintball in the Seattle camps and Camp Howard plans to introduce horses at Camp Howard in 2014. There is much similarity between the two groups and a lot to be learned from one another. The Portland staff will travel to Seattle in the fall of 2013 after the camp season concludes and fall sports are underway.
