CYO Championship Volleyball – A Program to be Proud of!

The 2013 CYO Championship Volleyball playoffs provided plenty of action and excitement for all in attendance.  The eighth grade playoff game between St. Matthew of Hillsboro and Christ the King of Milwaukie, was one of the most exceptional CYO volleyball contests I have seen in a long time.  The teams each split a game, going into over time and in the final game of the match the teams were nip and tuck to the very end when St. Matthew prevailed.  People got more than their moneys worth!

Some 1300 young women participated in this years volleyball program with all but a few teams participating in the end of season tournament.

The teams, coaches, and parents are to be commended for the participation and support they show to one another and to their teams.

Scheduling CYO Championship Games is a science at CYO

Scheduling Championship tournaments is much more than what it looks like to the person picking up their child’s schedule only to wonder what CYO was thinking!  Some of the issues we face each year include the following:

  • Gym availability – was the gym given that particular night?
  • Is the gym the right size for the grade playing?
  • Is the gym conducive to volleyball?  (How low is the ceiling?)
  • Are the teams playing at a location close enough in ability that the same official can do both games?
  • Where are the teams coming from who are playing in the game?
  • Is the home team opening the gym? Closing the gym?  (Maybe round one if at all possible)
  • Do games have to be played on Sunday?????
  • We worked very hard not to have championship games played on Sunday this year but the trade off was late nights for some kids during the week which we have already heard about….We will have to play on Sunday during basketball to get all the games in.
  • Can you work around our school auction? (this is very very hard to do especially since we don’t know who will win or lose!)
  • Can you work around our SAT score tests? Can you work around our placement tests?

CYO is always looking out for the best interests of the teams.  This is always our intention.

Martie Massey, OSU Volleyball Varsity walk-on, reconnects with CYO

The “Massie” name is no stranger to CYO circles and volleyball groups in general.  The family reigns from St. Cecilia and have left their mark in the CYO Volleyball world for sure.  Martie Massey, a CYO Volleyball standout is in her Junior year at Oregon State.  I visited with her Mother this fall and heard the story about Martie walking on at Oregon State and securing a place on the team.  Martie was home watching younger sister, Zoe, play basketball in the City Championships when I asked her to tell me about her experience at OSU.

Martie, a Biology and pre-med hopeful is a junior this year and in her third year of playing volleyball for OSU.  I asked her to tell me the story.  She said she was a freshman in 09-10 and had played spring club volleyball.  People encouraged her to try out for the varsity team at OSU.  So she joined the practices and after three practices they asked her to stay!  She has been there ever since!

She reports great friends and a lot of fun.  Some of the best people she has ever met in her life.  I asked her what the highlights have been thus far.

– Beating number 3 ranked CAL this year was great

– Split with U of O where another former CYO standout attends and plays – Liz Brenner

– Finishing 8th place, one place out of qualifying for the NCAA tournament – hopeful for next year

Martie Massie plans to graduate next spring.  She is proud of the fact that her volleyball team has the highest GPA average of all the teams at OSU of 3.5.   Martie was named to the 2nd Team All Academic Pac 12 team this year.

CYO wishes Martie Massie God’s special blessings as she continues her education at OSU and toward her career path.  We are proud of her accomplishments!

Down but Not Out!

Today was a great day for the Excell Volleyball team playing in the Las Vegas Tournament.  They won their first round game then on to their second round where they won that one too!.  Third round was a struggle and they lost that one.  Great volleyball that stretches the girls to new and improved abilities.  High School age advanced volleyball players from teams all across the United States and including Canada.

Tomorrow morning first game 8:00 am then to the airport for a flight back home.  This has been an educational weekend looking at how they lay out these tournaments, set up the sites and organize the teams.  I have met a lot of very nice people and wonderful fans watching their teams.

Now back to Portland for the CYO Basketball tournament!

What Happens in Vegas Stays in Vegas!

I am watching my niece play in the mammoth volleyball tournament here in Sin City.  Tournament starts today at 2:00 at the LV Convention Center.  Teams come from all over the US to be a part of this event.  College Scouts looking for potential players.  High School prep teams looking for competition and bragging rights!  Should be exciting!  Will keep you posted on any local teams I come across this weekend.
