CYO 3,4,5 Basketball Championship Games Begin Saturday March 8

Be ready to follow CYO third, fourth and fifth grade basketball championship action on Facebook, Twitter and my BLOG beginning tomorrow afternoon and finishing next weekend with sixth, seventh and eighth grade championships.

Lots of exciting action!  Don’t miss it!

CYO High School Basketball Championships Central Catholic vs Jesuit…

Nearly 600 high school youth participated in the CYO High School Basketball season this year with a snow storm forcing the end of season tournament to be moved to the following weekend.  CYO Basketball Director, Jenna Bass did a masterful job of finding gym space to finish of the season for the men and women and “make it happen!”

In both boys and girls Championship play, the closing minutes of the games found the teams in very close proximity to one another and tied in several instances.  Jesuit managed to pull it off with 5 of their 8 players with three missing due to their class retreat.

Central Catholic Men gave Jesuit a great game and it was anyones to have up to the end with a final score of 56 – 53 Jesuit.

Dulcich’s Jesuit Women’s team made it clear they came to play.  After an 8 – 0 start, Petrusich’s Jesuit Women’s team came alive and tied the game.  After a back and forth through out the game pattern, Petrusich’s Women went ahead by 5 and Dulcich Jesuit could not catchup.  A great contest between two groups of senior women who enjoyed playing one another.

CYO Championship Volleyball – A Program to be Proud of!

The 2013 CYO Championship Volleyball playoffs provided plenty of action and excitement for all in attendance.  The eighth grade playoff game between St. Matthew of Hillsboro and Christ the King of Milwaukie, was one of the most exceptional CYO volleyball contests I have seen in a long time.  The teams each split a game, going into over time and in the final game of the match the teams were nip and tuck to the very end when St. Matthew prevailed.  People got more than their moneys worth!

Some 1300 young women participated in this years volleyball program with all but a few teams participating in the end of season tournament.

The teams, coaches, and parents are to be commended for the participation and support they show to one another and to their teams.

CYO Track and Field Program Thank you!

Each of the CYO sports is made up of a CYO Sport Director,  Sport Commission, and Commission Chair.  Mark Lee is the CYO Track and Field Director, Paul Boileau is the Track Commission Chair and six individuals sit on the Commission.  Additionally, each of the Clubs that participate in CYO track and field have several coaches.

We are very blessed at CYO to have so many outstanding individuals helping produce the track and field regular season meets and the end of season Championship events for third through eighth grade participants.

These pictures were taken at the 2013 Coaches meeting prior to the final day of competition.  Who do you recognize?

Scheduling CYO Championship Games is a science at CYO

Scheduling Championship tournaments is much more than what it looks like to the person picking up their child’s schedule only to wonder what CYO was thinking!  Some of the issues we face each year include the following:

  • Gym availability – was the gym given that particular night?
  • Is the gym the right size for the grade playing?
  • Is the gym conducive to volleyball?  (How low is the ceiling?)
  • Are the teams playing at a location close enough in ability that the same official can do both games?
  • Where are the teams coming from who are playing in the game?
  • Is the home team opening the gym? Closing the gym?  (Maybe round one if at all possible)
  • Do games have to be played on Sunday?????
  • We worked very hard not to have championship games played on Sunday this year but the trade off was late nights for some kids during the week which we have already heard about….We will have to play on Sunday during basketball to get all the games in.
  • Can you work around our school auction? (this is very very hard to do especially since we don’t know who will win or lose!)
  • Can you work around our SAT score tests? Can you work around our placement tests?

CYO is always looking out for the best interests of the teams.  This is always our intention.

Champions of Faith Dinner 2012 — Check this out!

Check out our Champions of Faith info and get a glimpse of last years event:

http://www.champions-of-faith.org/

We are getting ready to launch our second CYO CHAMPIONS OF FAITH BENEFIT DINNER.  It will be held October 2nd at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland.  I am still amazed at our first dinner and what a fun event it was.  Joey Harrington scored a major touchdown for us with a touching and heartfelt talk on his football career.  His connection to CYO, Camp Howard and the Catholic School system made everyone in the room proud.

This years dinner features another outstanding CYO product, Karen Gaffney, who has found herself an esteemed speaker on behalf of Downes Syndrome.  Karen, with the help of her parents, set out to achieve some goals and as a result has accomplished some pretty incredible milestones.  Don’t miss this opportunity to hear her speak at the Champions of Faith Dinner this October.
