FIRST QUARTER: St. Clare jumped out to a 4-0 lead early in the first quarter holding Holy Redeemer scoreless until the final minutes when they evened the score at 4-4.  With .6 of a second remaining on the clock, Holy Redeemer drew a foul.  Final quarter score: Tied 4-4

SECOND QUARTER: Holy Redeemer took control of the game adding two hoops to the score and outpacing St. Clare 8-4.  St. Clare added three buckets in the second quarter but were in the red at the half time buzzer as Holy Redeemer put 13 points on the board. Final second quarter: 17 – 10 Holy Redeemer.

THIRD QUARTER: St. Clare missed to early free throws but came back with a two pointer in the first minute of play to reduce the deficit to 5.  With 5:25 to go, St. Clare had held Holy Redeemer scoreless, going ahead by a point 18-17.  The crowd roared!  Not a team to cower, Holy Redeemer sunk a 3 pointer to go ahead by 2.

FOURTH QUARTER: St. Clare quickly answered with their own two points to tie it up and we were in the midst of a barnburner for sure!  St. Clare added another two with 2:20 in the game to go ahead by 2-22-20!  With 1:11 in the game, Holy Redeemer drew a foul but could not convert.  Last minute helter skelter and long passes contributed to turnovers by both teams.  St. Clare went to the line to shoot 1 and 1 but could not convert.  Holy Redeemer dribbled the floor twice looking for a go ahead score, successful on the second attempt leaving 22.2 on the clock and two points ahead 24 – 22.  St. Clare strategized for the last several seconds of the game for the final basket to tie.  Lauren drew a foul for St. Clare and sunk the first shot.  She missed the second basket and that was all she wrote.

FINAL 24 – 23 Holy Redeemer.

St. Andrew Nativity School came into the tournament seeded #4 and upended the #1 seed, St. Clare in the second game of the bracket.  St. Anthony, the number two seed won both of their great 8 bracket games leading to the championship game.

St. Anthony’s Nicholas scored the first bucket three minutes into the game.  By the end of the first quarter, St. Anthony lead 14 – 7.  The second quarter saw St. Anthony picking up a greater spread over St. Andrew Nativity with a final half time score of 32 – 16.  The end of the game, however, St. Andrew Nativity was picking up the pace.

The second half began with St. Anthony sinking their first shot and stealing a couple of balls from St. Andrew.  Both teams traded shots back and forth as St. Anthony maintained the lead 40 – 16.

By the end of the fourth quarter, St. Anthony had outdistanced St. Andrew Nativity by a score of  54 to 26.  A fun game to watch as St. Andrew was not a pushover.  Both teams had very athletic players but St. Anthony had the height (this year).

Evenly matched teams kept pace with one another through the first half with lead changes and ties throughout.  With a last second St. John Fisher shot, they took the first half 10 – 6.

Both teams scoreless first 2 minutes of second half until St. John Fisher hit the mark for two.  St. Pius X had two breakaway layups and a steal converting on one to advance to 8 points near the minute mark in the third quarter. SJF’s “Allie”, a power player for sure, hit a critical 2-point shot with 10 seconds left following a few travel calls for her stutter steps.  The third quarter ended 14-8 St. John Fisher.

The fourth quarter maintained a 6-point spread after trading shots at 5 minutes left.  St. Pius X could not get the traction to give St. John Fisher a challenge for the balance.  St. John Fisher advance the lead to 9 until St. Pius X swished a two pointer to bring it within 7.  St. John Fisher’s “Allie” put in another quick 2 and brought it back to 9 with 1.25 left to play.  A last second three-point swisher by St. Pius X reduced the deficit to three.  Good games by both teams.

FINAL: St. John Fisher 23 – St. Pius X 16.

Holy Family came into the tournament with one loss in regular season play to Holy Trinity.  Our Lady of the Lake had three regular season losses: St. Pius X, Holy Trinity and Holy Family.  In tournament play this week, Our Lady of the Lake upset the number two seed, St. Pius X to advance to the championship game.

Our Lady of the Lake shot out to an early lead in the game and finished the first half 15 – 10.  With three minutes remaining in the third quarter, Holy Family lead 17 – 16 and kept the pressure on as the quarter ended 23 – 20 Holy Family.

The fourth quarter began with two rapid baskets for each team and a foul drawn by Holy Family that they could not convert on.  Quick paced, helter-skelter, dribbling theatrics, put back attempts were the name of the game for these feisty fifth grade boys whose antics were entertaining and fun to watch.

Holy Family’s Luke F. had the hot hand for the day swishing 3 two pointers at critical moments.  Game ended with a final score of Holy Family 40 – Our Lady of the Lake 27.

The Madeleine scored four points in the first 5 minutes of the game and held Holy Trinity scoreless until the last minute and 20 seconds when Holy Trinity scored their first hoop.  At the end of the first quarter, it was Madeleine 8 Holy Trinity 2.

As the second half opened, Holy Trinity added four more points in the first two minutes to come within two.  The height on the Holy Trinity team especially Kendra #42 was a factor under the basket and she wasn’t shy going for the rebounds.

With less than 2 minutes left in the game, Holy Trinity went ahead 19-10, holding the Madeleine to 2 free throws the second quarter of the game.

The third quarter, after pep talks by both coaches, saw both teams with a renewed surge of energy.  Holy Trinity finished the quarter with 13 new points and Madeleine 2 for a quarter ending score of 32 – 14 Holy Trinity.

The Holy Trinity defense forced Madeleine to take perimeter shots while the Holy Trinity team was able to break through for inside shots and most often obtain the rebound for the second and third try.  When Madeleine did get it to the inside they were not able to convert.  This write believes that the height factor for next year’s sixth grade girls will make a big difference!

Game Final: Holy Trinity 42, Madeleine 17

With 1:22 left in the third quarter, St. Cecilia began to turn on the burners and outscored All Saints for the quarter 12 – 11 with a score of 30 – 18 All Saints at the end of three.

With a very exciting fourth quarter and a lot of good play on both teams, All Saints maintained a lead of four points. The consistent ball handling and shooting of Lucas DePalma was too much for the St. Cecilia team to overcome in four quarters.
