CYO Boys Third Grade Basketball Final

A 30 second comeback sparked a barnstormer of a finish in the 3rd grade boys Championship game as the Madeleine team scored 7 points in under a minute.  They came within 3 points with 20 seconds left in the game but fouling to buy time resulted in a 4 point loss to St. John the Baptist.

CYO 3rd Grade Girls City Championship 2016

Christ the King (Milwaukie, OR) and the Madeleine School (Portland, OR) made their way to the big dance Saturday March 5th to compete in the CYO CITY Championship.

Third Grade Basketball is all about dribbling the ball and running… all while controlling the ball and not traveling… while the coaches yell out the play by play for their teams to keep them focused on what they should be doing… while capturing the ball from the other team and wrestling it away then “heaving” a high in the air shot as someone catches it, surprised and shuffles around not quite always sure what to do next.  Bonus is when those baskets connect.

First basket recorded in the second quarter matched by the other team within 30 seconds.  Both teams were then off to the races!

FINAL: Christ the King 21 Madeleine 10 – CONGRATULATIONS to both teams for a fun game to watch.

Leadership Behind the Scenes at Camp Howard is What Makes the Difference

Leadership in my opinion is what makes the difference between a good experience and a GREAT experience!  There have been some wonderful youth leaders employed at Camp Howard this summer and it has been a pleasure to watch them lead and grow these past 5 weeks.

The staff take their responsibility very seriously because after all they are taking care of people’s most prized possession…their kids!  Developing that special eye that looks out for the best in kids and making sure to keep them out of harms way at all times is what the Unit Directors impress on the counselors who are responsible for the cabins of children each week.

Leadership experiences on staff provide young leaders with an abundance of new tools for their personal toolboxes.  Camp work develops great skills in young people.

The camp Howard Leadership Team has done an outstanding job leading the camp, providing excellent experiences for the kids and I am very proud of them!

The Health Inspector Visited Camp Howard this Week and Guess What they Found?

It was a 5 hug salute to Karen von Borstel for an outstanding camp!  Health Inspector said she was going to write an article for their National Magazine citing the excellence she found at Camp Howard!  Hadn’t seen anything that good in her 20 years of inspections!

She was especially thrilled with the hand washing stations newly installed at the camp to get those hands clean!  Everyone washes their hands three times a day at least!

Karen has instilled in the staff the importance of cleanliness in the restrooms, pool and kitchen in particular as these are areas which serve everyone.  The staff has responded to the call to cleanliness and now it is a basic instinct to clean it well and clean it often!

All of the camp staff are to be commended for the excellent job they have done all summer keeping the camp clean and inviting!  Nice job to everyone on the Camp Howard staff!

Gift of Corn a Treat and Blessing at Camp Howard

Thank you, Margie Haener Barnett for the thoughtful gift of corn for all of the campers last week and family campers this weekend!  It was so greatly appreciated by everyone who was present!   The corn was prepared in the Camp Howard propane-heated wok and served up with hamburgers last night at family camp.  It was a major hit!

Remembering My Friend Sister Geraldine Bernards SSMO

I must pause and write a story about my friend, Sr. Geraldine.  I had the privilege of living with her at St. Therese convent which is attached to Maryville Nursing Home.  I was teaching at St. Mary of the Valley (Valley Catholic) at the time and lived with our Sisters who worked at the nursing home.  What a blessing to me to be around these Sisters.  Sister Geraldine and I had a lot in common.  We were both entrepreneurs, enjoyed people and spent very little time doing nothing!

She was the Director of Nurses at the time and had a heavy work schedule.  On Christmas and Thanksgiving she would put lunches and dinners on at the nursing home for the Staff who had to work and would not be at home for their meal.  They so appreciated that kind touch.  Several of us helped her out with it and I always made sure I was available to help her out.  She loved to cook so I was her chief bottle washer.

One of my favorite memories of her was the occasion of one of the many rummage sales we put on.  There was a tin Christmas tree that was really pretty cute but just wouldn’t sell.  On Saturday night before we cut all of the prices in half for Sunday we talked about how we could sell the tree.  We could either give it away….or increase the price!  We moved it from $12. to $50. and it went within the hour!  We chuckled about that for a long time.

When Sr. Geraldine celebrated 50 years in community she invited me to go on a trip to Alaska with her.  It was a fantastic adventure and I felt very honored to go.

After Sr. Theresa Margaret retired as CEO of Maryville, Sr. Geraldine became the administrator.  She was a visionary who made a lot of wonderful improvements to the facility.  Having been nurse, Director of Nurses and then Administrator, she really understood the work from top to bottom.

Sr. Geraldine passed away in May of this year.  She had suffered a stroke shortly after retiring from administrator of the nursing home.  She spent the last several years in our infirmary.  Sr. Theresa Ann Bunker was also her very special friend who went to school with her for nursing and worked at the nursing home side by side for many years.

I am a grateful soul for having witnessed the wonderful life of Sr. Geraldine Bernards.
