How Did Amanda Weddle Make the Money to Pay for Camp this Year?

Amanda Weddle

Amanda Weddle paid her way to Camp Howard this year by selling soap which her family makes from her prize winning 4-H Dairy Goats!   Not only that, she moved with her family to California so she flies to Portland for her annual week of camp at Camp Howard.  Her good friend, Emma Wycoff from Christ the King, makes plans to attend camp with Amanda as they were pals when Amanda lived in Portland.

Amanda gave me a gift of her soap this summer and I have to tell you, it is pretty special!  It smells good, it feels good and it is really special that Amanda has found a creative way to fund her summer passion!

I would like to invite you to check out the Weddle Family soaps and maybe help Amanda out by trying it!

Fourth of July

The Fourth of July is a day filled with all sorts of family traditions, memories, activities and of course fireworks! As a young girl growing up in North Central Oregon, we attended the family reunion every 4th of July and it was a great opportunity to see everyone outside of a wedding or funeral and have some fun together.  One of my favorite memories is the time The Dalles Fire Dept. set up a volleyball hung by a net bag to  a wire that strung about 100 feet in length with a tether at each end.  Two teams of five would each have a fire hose and try to move the volleyball from the center of the wire to the other end of the wire defeating the other team who was attempting to move the volleyball to the opposite end of the wire. It was a hot day, the water was refreshing and we got a sense of how powerful the water is going through the fire hose.

My Mom and my Aunts were all excellent cooks who cooked from scratch.  Aunt Marie and her daughter, Rita, achieved state fair honors, several years as “Queen of the Kitchen” and had a reputation for excellent cooking skills.  You could always count on great food at the picnics.

Even though the Fourth of July marked our Independence, it was also a Patriotic Holiday which led to talk about relatives who had given their lives in the various wars.  One of the most memorable in our family was my Dad’s first cousin who died in WWII.  When word reached his Mother in Central Oregon, she died of a heart attack.  They had a joint funeral Mass for them.

The 4th has always been one of my favorite holidays probably because it is a “good weather” holiday and we can enjoy outdoor activities.  This year I will be enjoying a barbecue with family and friends and we will have a trap shooting contest.

I hope you have a wonderful 4th of July!

Champions of Faith Dinner 2012 — Check this out!

Check out our Champions of Faith info and get a glimpse of last years event:

We are getting ready to launch our second CYO CHAMPIONS OF FAITH BENEFIT DINNER.  It will be held October 2nd at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland.  I am still amazed at our first dinner and what a fun event it was.  Joey Harrington scored a major touchdown for us with a touching and heartfelt talk on his football career.  His connection to CYO, Camp Howard and the Catholic School system made everyone in the room proud.

This years dinner features another outstanding CYO product, Karen Gaffney, who has found herself an esteemed speaker on behalf of Downes Syndrome.  Karen, with the help of her parents, set out to achieve some goals and as a result has accomplished some pretty incredible milestones.  Don’t miss this opportunity to hear her speak at the Champions of Faith Dinner this October.

God, Family Time and Sports

I enjoy sports as much as or maybe even a little more than the average person.  Sports have been an important part of my life since I was a small child playing on my grade school teams.

I am concerned about the way sports have taken over Sunday mornings and family holidays such as Fourth of July just to name one!

Sunday morning should be set aside for those who take time to worship God.  What a message we send when we choose sports over God!

My niece plays club volleyball and I have asked her to vote with her feet and let her coaches know at the beginning of the season that she plans to be with family on the Fourth of July, and Labor Day, and Mothers Day, and Fathers Day…

A Bishop in Iowa has taken on the topic which I appreciate.  I encourage all of us to follow his lead and take back Sunday mornings, family holidays and religious education time!

Michael Bergmann – CYO Track and Field “Legend”

From the CYO Awards Night Banquet May 22, 2012:

In 1997 when I began my role as Executive Director of CYO/Camp Howard, another person joined on as a volunteer on the Track and Field Commission.  I am sure that he was as amazed as I was at the disorganization of the program.  God has a way of bringing the right people at the right time to fix things and little did I know the gift that came in the package of this individual.

I went to lunch with him toward the end of the winter as we were looking ahead to Track and Field.  I showed him a booklet that Herb Lommen had put together for his CYO program and I asked Mike to help me update it for the purposes of a starting point for the CYO Track and Field program. Sort of a primer for coaches you might say.  We went to work on that book and used it for several years to train coaches in the sport for CYO.

Our Commission grew and our coaching base improved.  We soon had a commission filled with very astute track and field members.  John Cronise joined the group and helped us get a timing system in place.  With this capability, it was John Cronise and the CYO timing system that got the high schools started with similar timing systems.

For the first several years we would run championship events and let the teams know a few days later who won the event!  We did not have a software program to help us score the event in a timely manner nor the expertise at the time to do it by hand.

We evolved from 600+ athletes in track and one regular season meet per weekend to some 1600 participants today with four track meets per weekend.  Today we are nationally recognized, we constantly hear positive comments from people about the efficiency of our meets.  For example:

Shalane Flanagan, will represent the United States in the Marathon in London this summer.  She attended the CYO Meet of Champions this past weekend thanks to her running coach, Jerry Schumaker whose son runs for CYO out of St. Thomas More.

She was amazed at the organization and efficiency of the CYO meet and commented that her own state meet was no-where near as organized.

Youth Runner Magazine makes a point to attend our Meet of Champions every year now to find stories about some of the very best track and field participants in the nation right here in Bridge city!

The CYO Track and Field program has developed to this point of sophistication because a man with a passion for the sport and a vision for where this program could be, stepped up to volunteer.  Thanks to his leadership, others joined such as Paul Boileau, Jim Bridges, Sean Phillips, Alisha Hamel, Kelly Alfieri and others that have served previously on the commission.

Mike Bergmann called me as I was on my way to the Roadrunner Track and Field meet last weekend and told me he was going to step down from his role as Commission Chair.  I told him I knew this day would come eventually.  He told me he has done all he can do.  The program is in tip top shape, the commission is loaded with capable people and he has other work to do.  He also mentioned he won’t be far away.

Mike would be the first to say it was not he alone who accomplished the great works of the Track and field success.  It wasn’t.  If it weren’t for the others who came to help we could not have achieved what we have over the past 15 years.  But I will say that from my observation post, Mike brought the leadership we needed to get the program to the place it is today, and the individuals who joined forces were essential in making this program one of National recognition.

We have bestowed two legend awards in the past 15 years.  The first was to Fr. Carl Gimpl for his efforts at Camp Howard.  The second was to Dick Weigel for his several years of Board leadership in the organization.  Tonight we are honoring Michael Bergmann with our Legends award for 15 years of service and excellence in the CYO Track and Field program.

Thanks Mike! – Love Sister Krista

St. Mary’s Academy Scores Huge Hit with Title IX (Forty Year Commemoration) Dinner

I am so glad I attended the St. Mary’s Academy Title IX Dinner at the Tiger Woods (Nike Campus).  My friends know I often refer to myself as a “Title IX Girl!”  Local soccer star and Olympic Gold and Silver medalist, Tiffeny Milbrett was the guest speaker and Diane Hooley warmed up the crowd with a little Title IX history which was interesting.  Milbrett stole the show showing her real self, a warm hearted wholesome sport loving young woman raised in Hillsboro, OR. She played for the University of Portland and made the 1996 Team USA Soccer team (first time soccer was an olympic sport for women) where she played for 15 years winning a gold and silver medal and several World Cup honors.

Title IX is very important to women and today’s youth has no idea about the impact.  The law has been challenged over 20 times and is vital to gender equity for women.   I started high school in 1972, the year that title IX passed.  I spent my four years helping put high school teams together for girls.  We made our own basketball uniforms while the boys had brand new ones every year.

I hope you encourage your daughters AND sons to read and become familiar with Title IX.  It is about a LOT MORE than sports!
