Giving the Best of Yourself

https://zenit.org/articles/giving-the-best-of-yourself-the-vaticans-new-document-on-sport/

I was thrilled to find this wonderful document about the Christian perspective on sport and the human person. I have long believed that sports are crucial to the school day, that contests help promote schools AND that occasional games on Sunday’s, outside of Mass times, are a wholesome and appropriate activity for youth. Please enjoy the following short excerpt taken from the document:

“The Church has been engaged in dialogue with sport from the earliest years of its existence. It is well known that St. Paul used sports metaphors to explain the Christian life to the Gentiles. In the medieval period, lay Catholics played games and sports on feast days, which accounted for a good deal of the year, as well as on Sundays. Such play found theological support in the writing of Thomas Aquinas who argued that there can be “a virtue about games” because virtue has to do with moderation. A virtuous person, by this account, should not be working all the time, but also needs time for play and recreation. The humanists of the Renaissance and the early Jesuits made use of Thomas Aquinas’ understanding of virtue when they decided that students needed time for play and recreation during the course of the school day. This was the original rationale for the inclusion of play and sports in educational institutions in the Western world.”

The beautiful document is worthy of a read by of us! Enjoy!

Motherhouse Road Trip Makes a Stop at My House!

Motherhouse Road Trip is a podcast put out by “A Nun’s Life”, a not for profit in Ohio that sheds light for young women interested in religious life on various religious communities around the country.  They made a stop at the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon in Beaverton to record a show which ended up being a lot of fun for the sisters and students at our Valley Catholic School as well. Sister Adele Marie Altenhofen and I were the “interviewees” and it was actually a lot of fun for us as well!  I have included a link in case you would like to listen in!

Sentimental Journey

SEPTEMBER 20, 2018 WINONA LAKE, INDIANA

IMG_0258

Every year I make my annual vacation to Indiana to visit my Aunt Nancy (Mom’s sister) and her family.  It is always very special to me because these are really some very special people to me.  One of the things we ALWAYS do is take our sentimental journey to visit the places that were important in our family history on that side of the family.

Highlights on the trip include a visit to Sidney, Indiana where my Grandfather and Grandmother met.  Grandpa lived on the street that Grandma’s sister lived on.  She would come to visit and Grandpa must have had a keen eye!  The sad part of the story is that she died when my Mom was 4 and Aunt Nancy was 3.  We visit her gravesite every year along with other family members who are buried there in Collamer near South Whitley, IN.

Next we go to North Manchester, IN to visit Benders Funeral Home where Grandpa was an embalmer.  After his wife died he quit the business.

We have such a good time retelling the stories that my cousins are now interested in taking the tour with us.  My cousin Dan Hoeppner asked to join us this year and of course we were thrilled to have his company.  We have a place on the trip where we always take pictures in front of the Indiana Street sign.  It on the street my grandparents met.
