Ava David Overpowers Competition in CYO Cadet Girls Shot Put Championship

Ava David came into the CYO Championship events with a seeded put of 35’8″.  She won the event with a put of 37’9.5 inches which I have to believe is a personal best for her.  If so, the championship event was the best time to have a personal best.  Paige Cooper was on Ava’s heels all the way with a similar story.  Both girls are to be commended on their distances.  Anna Adamko set a 40″ record in 2007 which would be fun to see broken!

CHAMPION: Ava David (Our Lady of the Lake) 37’9.50″

2nd: Paiger Cooper (All Saints) 36’11.5″

3rd: Grace Williams (St. Matthew) 32.11.5″

Abigail Sheets From St. Ignatius wins the Cub Girls SHOT PUT

The men’s shot put has been present on the Olympic athletics program since 1896 (one of two throws events at the first Olympics, alongside the discus). The women’s event was added to the program at the 1948 Olympics just over fifty years later.

One of the historical issues with field events is that it is difficult to be there to watch for a lot of people and the races always get the glitter because they take place right in front of the grandstands.  But, having been a field event person myself, it is important for me to let the kids in the field events know that their contributions to team points are very valuable and without you, it makes the difference in team championships!!!

Congratulations, Abigail for your 27′ 9″ PUT on Sunday afternoon, May 17th at the CYO Meet of Champions that garnered St. Ignatius 10 points for their team score, and a CHAMPIONSHIP for you!  Well done!

Champion: Abigail Sheets (St. Ignatius 27′ 9″

2nd: Josie Napoli (St. John Fisher) 27’8.5″ (Wow 1/2 inch separated first from second)

3rd: Abigail Pressnell (Our Lady of the Lake) 26’5″

4th: Eliza DiGiulio (St. Clare) 25’11”

5th: Isabella McVicker (Our Lady of the Lake) 24’8″

6th: Samantha Ford (St. PIus X) 24’7.5″

7th: Alicia Andrew (Our Lady of Lourdes) 24’6″

8th: Bergen Bakken (St. Thomas More) 24’3″

Congratulations to all of our CYO Cub Girls Shot putters!!! Nice job

Not sure where he came from but he made an impact at the CYO Meet of Champions with his red hair and genuine great kid smile as he sailed to victory in the 400, 200 and 100 meter dashes!  A powerful runner with great speed and a lot of great qualities that will make him a much sought after high school athlete for sure.  Seton are you listening?

For those of you who are wondering where Pacific Crest Academy is, it is in the Camas area in Clark County Washington.  Pacific Crest has participated for several years in the CYO program.  Blake’s performance Saturday and Sunday turned some heads for sure including mine!

Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon Begin General Chapter Meetings in Beaverton

Chapter

The word is said to be derived from the chapter of the rule book: it is a custom under the Rule of Saint Benedict that monks or nuns gather daily for a meeting to discuss monastery business, hear a sermon or lecture, or receive instructions from the abbot/abbess, and as the meeting begins with a reading of a chapter from the Rule, the meeting itself acquired the name “chapter”, and the place where it is held, “chapter house” or “chapter room”.

The term was then extended to apply to other meetings. The term general chapter designates a monastic general assembly, usually of representatives from all of the monasteries of an order or congregation.

The Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon (SSMO) hold a general chapter every five years for the purpose of spiritual introspection, charting the course for the next five years and election of new leadership.

The Chapter was opened by Sr. Charlene Herinckx on Sunday March 22, 2015 with 61 members of the Congregation in attendance.  The meetings will conclude Saturday March 28th.
