2017 8th Grade Boys CYO Championship Basketball

Holy Redeemer (White)

Coaches: Anton Glover, Terrence Lawrence Roberson, Joe Marx

Players: Trey, Quinn, Luke, Ryan, Samuel, Nickolas, Jalen, Dominic, LaVontae

Holy Trinity – Three time defending CYO Champions.

Coaches: Robert Holthaus, John Lang

Players: Sean, Joseph, Nicholas. Cole, James, Nathan, Ethan, Nathaniel, Amit, Charlie

Q1:  Exciting first quarter action saw both teams come out to a very fast paced high flying level of skill with a touch of jitters especially on the 3 time champion Holy Trinity team.  Quarter score 13 – 5 Holy Redeemer.

Q2:  Holy Redeemer opened the quarter with a basket answered by Holy Trinity’s tall guy, Pickard.  Both teams featured a variety of heights, stages of the growth process in action.  Holy Redeemer’s Anderson answered on the other end of the court.  Back and forth baskets and free throws resulted in a score of 20 -14 Holy Redeemer with 3 minutes left in the half.  As both teams were fully warmed up and in their element by the end of the first half, there was evidence the game would be a good one.  Holy Trinity would be within 4 points before a free throw made it five for Holy Redeemer at the end of the half.  Half time score: 23 – 18 Holy Redeemer.

Q3: Holy Redeemer’s Johnson scores the first hoop of the half and Holy Trinity is unable to answer on the other end.  Phillips puts another two in for Holy Redeemer and Trinity again loses the ball under their basket.  Time out…regroup.  Lang goes to the free throw line and sinks one, sinks two.  Holy Redeemer travels on their end and Holy Trinity gets another chance to reduce the deficit.  Airball!  Holy Redeemer throws it out of bounds on an inbound as Holy Trinity takes over again ball stripped and two more points Redeemer.

Anderson shoots a three pointer and it swishes through the basket.  Holy Trinity answers score 34 – 26 Holy Trinity.  Holthaus attempts another hoop and draws a foul, misses one, misses two, Redeemer rebounds, Trinity steals and Lang is fouled at the layup.  Lang misses one, hits one.  Lang draws another foul on the next trip down, hits one, hits two now a 5-point game!  Holy Redeemer puts in another two and that ends the quarter 36 – 29.

Q4: Lang opens the quarter with a hoop and Shuster draws a foul on the next trip down.  Misses one, (don’t those free throws add up?), misses two, back and forth ensues for three trips up and down before Redeemer adds another 2.  Pickard answers with a mighty muscle shot from below the hoop and time out is called, 38 – 35.  Holy Redeemer inbounds the ball, Hallinan shoots, misses, Johnson rebounds and puts it in.  Both teams give up the ball, Trinity’s Shuster picks up a free throw opportunity and puts them both in.  40 – 37 Redeemer.  Houston…we have a game!  Holy Trinity fans go crazy, launch into some great cheers, Redeemer joins in and the house is rockin’!

Holy Redeemer adds a score by Ridgeway after several player-attempts his goes in followed by another bucket by Anderson on the next trip down.  Redeemer 44 – 37 and Trinity’s Valluri fouls.

Two minutes left in the game and it is not looking good for the three time defending champions.  Not a team to roll over and play dead, Lulay scores for HT and they are still in the game.  Anderson scores again not letting the door open again and he steals the ball, draws a foul.  Holy Trinity takes it down the court but Lang cannot convert, Redeemer picks it up and draws another foul and this time Anderson goes to the line for two.  With 46 seconds left and score of 46 – 39, Anderson throws the ball in as Holy Trinity begins the fouling sequence to extend the season a few minutes.  Hallinan hits two for Redeemer as Holy Trinity rolls the ball down the floor then Lang shoots a three pointer and misses.  Hallinan misses but Johnson puts it up for him and scores two more points.  Shuster puts up a three but again they miss and Johnson goes to the line for Holy Redeemer.  With a twelve-point lead and ten seconds to go, the Redeemer starters head to the bench and the game ends 52 – 39 Holy Redeemer.  It is a great game in spite of the score.  Holy Trinity has won the past three championships but today it went to Holy Redeemer.  Both teams played great games and it was fun and exciting to watch.

First Quarter:  Both teams came out to a shaky start but it didn’t take St. John Fisher long to rev up te engines with some great shots under the basket and a few long shots by Napoli & Grant.  Holy Family’s Koch had a great rebound and basket to score for the Cardinals as well.  Q1: St. John Fisher 12 – 4

Second Quarter: St. John Fisher controlled the first half of the quarter scoring most of its 6 points lead by Napoli, and Grant.  Holy Family hoisted a comeback with some good ball control and athleticism of Koch with some great down the court and in the hoop efforts. Q2 18 – 12 St. John Fisher

Third Quarter:  Holy Family’s Potestio led off with a three point basket and a free throw following a SJF foul.  SJF answered with a basket and with 6:00 to play SJF 20 – 16.  Potestio drew another foul, sinking both of them to bring HF within 4.  Q3 28 – 18 St. John Fisher

Fourth Quarter:  With three minutes left in the game, each team scored a basket 26 – 20.  Time out was called to save the ball and regroup.  Holy Family came out of the timeout and delivered four fouls in a row to SJF for strategic purposes.  P.Grant went to the line for SJF on the first shooting foul and connected for 2.  Holy Family was fouled at the other end, Napoli picking up her fourth foul, the bucket counted and no conversions.  SJF picked up two more on the other end then spread the offence and played keep away until Menendez was fouled with 1:14 in the game.  No conversion and HF sunk 2 on the next trip.  30 – 24. P. Grant made another trip to the free throw line and missed as H.F.’s Potestio had a chance on the return end.  With 38 seconds, Potestio sunk one, missed one, now within 5.  Menendez went to the free throw line for SJF missed one, made one, 6 point spread again.

Holy Family, could not get the ball into the basket then sent Menendez to the line again, made one, missed one, picked up her own rebound and put it in for another two! Play of the game for sure!  Made the extra shot with 5 seconds left in the game.  Holy Family and St. John Fisher finish up their CYO careers with a game both teams can be proud of!

FINAL: St. John Fisher 35 – 25

Quarter 3: St. Pius X made traction toward catching up and making it an exciting fourth quarter set up with their 3-poing last second shot finishing the quarter with a 26-22 Valley Catholic lead.

Quarter 4:  An exciting battle between both teams with fast action, quick passes but loaded also with turnovers and lost balls.  Ethan’s 3-point shots were critical.  With two minutes left in the game, St. Pius X began the foul strategy to provide opportunities.  With 1:42 Valley held the lead at 38 – 33.  Valley Catholic’s Ben had two free throws with 1:25 left in the game which, if missed would have opened a door for the charging St. Pius team to enter.  Ben closed the door with two buckets and St. Pius X could not get the traction going to open it up again.

St. Anthony’s Nicholas scored the first bucket three minutes into the game.  By the end of the first quarter, St. Anthony lead 14 – 7.  The second quarter saw St. Anthony picking up a greater spread over St. Andrew Nativity with a final half time score of 32 – 16.  The end of the game, however, St. Andrew Nativity was picking up the pace.

By the end of the fourth quarter, St. Anthony had outdistanced St. Andrew Nativity by a score of  54 to 26.  A fun game to watch as St. Andrew was not a pushover.  Both teams had very athletic players but St. Anthony had the height (this year).

Holy Family came into the tournament with one loss in regular season play to Holy Trinity.  Our Lady of the Lake had three regular season losses: St. Pius X, Holy Trinity and Holy Family.  In tournament play this week, Our Lady of the Lake upset the number two seed, St. Pius X to advance to the championship game.

Our Lady of the Lake shot out to an early lead in the game and finished the first half 15 – 10.  With three minutes remaining in the third quarter, Holy Family lead 17 – 16 and kept the pressure on as the quarter ended 23 – 20 Holy Family.

The fourth quarter began with two rapid baskets for each team and a foul drawn by Holy Family that they could not convert on.  Quick paced, helter-skelter, dribbling theatrics, put back attempts were the name of the game for these feisty fifth grade boys whose antics were entertaining and fun to watch.

Holy Family’s Luke F. had the hot hand for the day swishing 3 two pointers at critical moments.  Game ended with a final score of Holy Family 40 – Our Lady of the Lake 27.

The Madeleine scored four points in the first 5 minutes of the game and held Holy Trinity scoreless until the last minute and 20 seconds when Holy Trinity scored their first hoop.  At the end of the first quarter, it was Madeleine 8 Holy Trinity 2.

As the second half opened, Holy Trinity added four more points in the first two minutes to come within two.  The height on the Holy Trinity team especially Kendra #42 was a factor under the basket and she wasn’t shy going for the rebounds.

With less than 2 minutes left in the game, Holy Trinity went ahead 19-10, holding the Madeleine to 2 free throws the second quarter of the game.

The third quarter, after pep talks by both coaches, saw both teams with a renewed surge of energy.  Holy Trinity finished the quarter with 13 new points and Madeleine 2 for a quarter ending score of 32 – 14 Holy Trinity.

The Holy Trinity defense forced Madeleine to take perimeter shots while the Holy Trinity team was able to break through for inside shots and most often obtain the rebound for the second and third try.  When Madeleine did get it to the inside they were not able to convert.  This write believes that the height factor for next year’s sixth grade girls will make a big difference!

Game Final: Holy Trinity 42, Madeleine 17
