Abigail Sheets From St. Ignatius wins the Cub Girls SHOT PUT

The men’s shot put has been present on the Olympic athletics program since 1896 (one of two throws events at the first Olympics, alongside the discus). The women’s event was added to the program at the 1948 Olympics just over fifty years later.

One of the historical issues with field events is that it is difficult to be there to watch for a lot of people and the races always get the glitter because they take place right in front of the grandstands.  But, having been a field event person myself, it is important for me to let the kids in the field events know that their contributions to team points are very valuable and without you, it makes the difference in team championships!!!

Congratulations, Abigail for your 27′ 9″ PUT on Sunday afternoon, May 17th at the CYO Meet of Champions that garnered St. Ignatius 10 points for their team score, and a CHAMPIONSHIP for you!  Well done!

Champion: Abigail Sheets (St. Ignatius 27′ 9″

2nd: Josie Napoli (St. John Fisher) 27’8.5″ (Wow 1/2 inch separated first from second)

3rd: Abigail Pressnell (Our Lady of the Lake) 26’5″

4th: Eliza DiGiulio (St. Clare) 25’11”

Cub Boys Long Distance Runners…Who Won the 1500?

Jeffery Rogers, Ryan Schumacher, Luke Horne, Jeffery Osborn and Anders Beil are a few names you will see at the top of the list of the long distance runners for cub boys in CYO.  The question is, who will be at the top of the list each time?

Ryan Schumacher had the best times coming into the Meet of Champions but you know, some days just aren’t your days!  Luke Horne had an amazing end of race victory in the 3000.  Jeffery Rogers, whose best time in the 1500 was only 3 seconds slower than Schumachers, shaved 7 or 8 seconds off his best time to win the event.

Champion: Jeffery Rogers (St. Anthony) 4:54.36

2nd: Ryan Schumacher (St. Thomas More) 4:59.21

3rd: Luke Horne (Holy Trinity) 4:59.72

4th: Anders Beil (St. Thomas More) 5:01.51

Chloe Foerster Edges out CYO 3000 Meter Champ Kelly Park in the 1500

Kelly Park from Holy Trinity came into 1500 Meter with the best seeded time 5:09.01.  Chloe Foerster from St. Pius X had a seed time of 5:33.46.  At the end of the race, Chloe had a final time of 5:04.41, nearly a 30 second improvement in her time and the 2015 championship.  Kelly Park finished second in the CYO Meet of Champions with a time of 5:12.77.  I suspect Kelly’s effort the day before in the 3000 had an impact on her 1500 performance.

I attended the Oregon Middle School Meet of Champions in Corvallis hosted by Linus Pauling Middle School and had the opportunity to watch Chloe where she finished fourth in the 3000 and sixth in the 800 agains the very best middle school competition in the state.  I might also add that the St. Pius girls won the meet!

Excellent job to the entire field!

Blake Deringer puts Pacific Crest Academy on the Map!

Not sure where he came from but he made an impact at the CYO Meet of Champions with his red hair and genuine great kid smile as he sailed to victory in the 400, 200 and 100 meter dashes!  A powerful runner with great speed and a lot of great qualities that will make him a much sought after high school athlete for sure.  Seton are you listening?

For those of you who are wondering where Pacific Crest Academy is, it is in the Camas area in Clark County Washington.  Pacific Crest has participated for several years in the CYO program.  Blake’s performance Saturday and Sunday turned some heads for sure including mine!

First: Blake Deringer, Second: Andrew Benson (St. Ignatius), Third: Aidan Gratton (Cathedral), Fourth: Alex Guitteau (Holy Family), Fifth: Grant Miller (West Hills Christian), Sixth Blake Schneck (St. Pius X), Seventh: Davis Raz (West Hills Christian).

Two well matched teams excellent defensive skills. Game differential was not more than 5 points most of the game. A fun game to watch from beginning to end where the score was tied 33 to 33 until the last 30 seconds when St. Pius scored 2. Valley Catholic answered with their own two points and with 19 seconds left, St. Pius called a timeout. St. Pius scored with 7 seconds left and Valley could not answer at their end of the court. Great game by both teams.

Holy Family had several opportunities to reclaim the lead including several free throws in the last 45 seconds but missed three of four. St. Agatha won 30 – 28.
