2023 CYO 6th Grade Boys City Championship at Valley Catholic School

Game Highlights:

First half – The two teams stayed evenly matched throughout the first half with the score staying within 1 to 4 points of each other.

Second Half – St. Pius X garnered a considerable lead which St. Andrew Nativity worked hard to close, getting within 5 in the fourth quarter.  In the end, St. Pius X by 6 in a great game by both teams.

Game Highlights:

First half, Two feisty, great shooting teams very well matched creating a lot of excitement.  Neither team was afraid to shoot three pointers and they sunk them like pros.

In the second half, St. Anthony overpowered St. Ignatius, widening the gap and St. Ignatius could not make it up.  It was a great game with a lot of intensity.

Game Highlights:

A high scoring game with both teams sinking 3 pointers toward the end of the first half with the score vacillating until St. Pius X drilled the last basket of the half to go ahead by 3.  Amos for St. Clare hit three, three-pointers.

St. Clare broke open in the third quarter behind some three-point shooting including another by Amos to close out the period. St. Clare added 17 points to St. Pius X’s 6.

Both teams performed well in the fourth quarter but St. Clare outscored St. Pius X by one point with thirteen for the quarter.  The game was fun to watch and kept the fans on the edge of their seats!

A lot of back and forth between both teams, learning to execute plays, and other fundamentals. They generated a lot of excitement for their crowds.

Game Highlights November 19, 2022

Match 1: St. Thomas More 25, Valley Catholic 19

Match 2: Valley Catholic 25, St. Thomas More 11

Vivian brought Valley Catholic from a 7-5 deficit with 5 points scored followed by Milania with another 5 and Jaden added another 2 before retiring the serve to St. Thomas More.  The scoring blitz gave Valley Catholic a 17 to 7 lead before they won the match 25 – 11.  

Match 3:

St. Thomas More opened the match with a 6-0 run to give the Bulldogs a strong lead.  Both teams had some exceptional rallies in the third match which made for a very exciting game.

Each team took a match to begin the game and the final match was hard fought to the end. Two very evenly matched teams with skilled third graders who we will likely see in top level volleyball contention in the future.

Remember When we High Jumped into Sawdust?


Have you wondered why kids are jumping a lot higher these days than 50 years ago?  Remember when we didn’t have foam to jump in so we used the softest things we could find like sawdust, at our school!  I have heard others speak of straw bales and sand!  I was in the eighth grade when we got our first net bag filled with giant foam rectangles.  That was a real improvement!  What did YOU high jump onto?

Game Highlights:

  • Intense defense for St. Matthew and St. Cecilia (lots of ball pressure)
  • Crowd and atmosphere were spectacular! Parents and benches for both sides invested in their kids and teammates.
  • Cecilia great cheers in between quarters and timeouts (You gotta want it to win it!)
  • Strong 8-0 run in the 2nd quarter increased gap to 17 – 9
  • Intense defense carried into 2nd half with full court pressure by both sides
  • #22 on St. Matthew great drive to hoop for layup and steals inboud pass for another great layup
  • Huge 3rd quarter for St. Matthew took the lead up to 17 thanks to smothering defense
  • #23 hit a deep 3 with 1:30 to go in the 4th quarter to put on an exclamation point
  • Great team chant for St. Cecilia cheering their team on to the very end
