Remember When we High Jumped into Sawdust?

Have you wondered why kids are jumping a lot higher these days than 50 years ago?  Remember when we didn’t have foam to jump in so we used the softest things we could find like sawdust, at our school!  I have heard others speak of straw bales and sand!  I was in the eighth grade when we got our first net bag filled with giant foam rectangles.  That was a real improvement!  What did YOU high jump onto?

Thank you Clayton Smith for your wonderful photography:

Holy Family CYO Legends & Legacy – Awesome Event!

HOLY FAMILY SCHOOL MAY 5, 2017

I attended the Holy Family “Legends & Legacy” event at the Celebration Center in the School to honor and celebrate CYO Sports within the parish and school community.  Awesome volunteers like Rebecca Brandt and Ted Collins were on hand to emcee the show and honor coaches, athletes and thank parents.  It was a wonderful event that really epitomized the CYO spirit throughout.

Rosie Honl, former CYO participant and coach and current Varsity Coach for the Crook County High School Volleyball team was the featured speaker and she was wonderful in every way.  An inspiration, clinician and entertainer rolled into one.  She holds the record for consecutive State Championship wins for Oregon High School volleyball at eight in a row!

In addition to all of the wonderful praise heaped upon the players and gratitude for coaches, one very special coach was inducted into the Holy Family CYO Hall of Fame, none other than Bill Mildenberger.  I could not have been happier than to have witnessed the event.

Congratulations to a great club making great memories for kids!

CYO 3 Girls City Double Overtime!

St. Pius X scored the first basket in the first minute of the game. St. Clare added a point off a free throw with two minutes left in the first quarter. Score at the end of the first quarter was 2 – 1 St. Pius X.  Barnburner in the making.

St. Pius X added another 2 points at the opening of the second quarter as both teams appeared warmed up and over the jitters. Another two points for St. Pius X made it a 6-1 game. With 37 seconds left in the first half, St. Clare scored a basket and controlled the ball until the buzzer ending with a score of 6-3 St. Pius X.

Second half action saw St. Clare score quickly adding two points to their deficit.  A foul with 1:12 in the quarter added one point to St. Clare, evening the score at 6-6.

St. Pius X started out the fourth quarter with a basket advancing 8-6 with St. Clare attempting a 1 and 1 and unable to convert.  The game was getting very exciting and the crowd was roaring after every shot.

With one minute to go, St. Clare tied the game at 8-8.  With 23 seconds left and a tied game, St. Pius X had a chance to score on a free throw but could not convert.  St. Clare had the same opportunity with 6 seconds left and missed, throwing the game into overtime tied 8-8.

Overtime 1:  (2 minutes)  With 42 seconds left in the first quarter, St. Clare scored one point on a one and one, leaving St. Pius X 35 seconds to battle back.  Pius was fouled with 31 seconds left in the game and they scored, squaring the game again at 9-9.  St. Clare with  19 seconds on the clock had another opportunity to score from a foul.  No luck.

Overtime 2: (1 minute) With 32 seconds left in overtime, St. Clare scored two points at their basket.  St. Pius could not convert on their foul throws following and had two opportunities to score with steals under their own basket.  A great game by both teams!

The Holy Trinity third grade girls were crowned 2016 CYO Champions for volleyball this year in a unique season ending game.  The Madeleine School who should have played in the contest against Holy Trinity was unable to field a team.  Several CYO Staff members stepped forward to take on the third grade team.  In a close game, 25 – 19, the Holy Trinity Titans prevailed winning the end of season tournament!  Congratulations girls!

St. John Fisher 7th Girls Win the Big One!

The St. John Fisher Girls remember too well the painful loss of 2015 where they were involved in the famous 6x overtime (CYO Record) Championship game with St. Pius X.  Coming into the game this year, SJF had lost twice in regular season to Holy Family.

St. John Fisher came off the bench on fire and ran up a first quarter lead of 9-4.

With 1:15 in the second quarter, Holy Family went ahead for the first time 11-9.

The third quarter was scoreless until the final 3 minutes when Holy Family led a run on points.  St. John Fisher answered back and went ahead on two free throws by Josie Napoli with 1.3 seconds left in the quarter.

With 2:47 remaining in the game, Holy Family tied the game then went ahead on a steal.  The momentum had swung toward Holy Family and the crowd was behind them.  St. John Fisher, not a team to give it up, kept fighting and tied it back up at 17 all.  Molly Grant powered a shot through the hoop with 23 seconds left for 2 points giving SJF the advantage at 19 – 17.

FINAL: 19 – 17 St. John Fisher

All Saints Girls win CYO 8th Grade BXB Title

All Saints range of talent from Claire Bass, Anna Patterson and Tiana Abraham made it difficult for St. Anthony to make traction in the CYO City Championship game.  St. Anthony, to their credit hung in and even brought the game within 5 points in the second half.  A great game to watch.

FINAL: 46-31 All Saints
