Michael Kirwin and JP Fogarty make it into the finals of the annual trap shooting competition at Camp Howard. Mike Kirwin has bragging rights for 2013-14 after an excellent finals round between the two that saw a dozen clay pidgins in flight before the contest concluded. The competition included 20 individuals- all of whom were sad to be eliminated in the five round competition!

Fr. Kroll (right) and his blood sister, Jean (left) join Fr. Leo Remington for a tour at Camp Howard with Sister Krista von Borstel.  One of the tidbits learned along the way was that Fr. Leo wrote the Camp Howard Fight Song while a counselor/seminarian at Camp Howard as a young man.

DSC_0056

Connor Garcia’s summer is coming to an end as he prepares to return to Carroll College this month.  His summer job at CYO has been to download all of the championship events from the 2012-13 year and process them into MP4 format.  The Championship games will soon be made available for download onto social media devices through the CYO on line store.  In addition to the 2012 – 13 CYO sport year, Connor has been working on previous years as well.  God willing, Connor will return to CYO next summer to continue the work and move back to earlier years as well.

The Camp Howard 60th Anniversary was a great success on Saturday July 20th with great food, tours of the camp, visiting and the Country band “Countrified” on Horton Field at Camp Howard. Over 350 people attended the event and visited the iconic youth camp which has provided a rite of passage for youth in the Pacific Northwest.

Brothers, Mark and Ron Mobley, founders of the band “Countrified” were classmates of Karen and Sister Krista von Borstel in North Central Oregon. The Mobley boys and their band were a tremendous hit at Camp Howard among the attendees at the event.

Camp Howard has gone through a variety of changes over the years which is natural.  Going back to revisit the roots will be part of the celebration this Saturday as the CYO/Camp Howard staff and Friends of Camp Howard mark the moment in time.

Let us know if you can identify any of the campers in the photo below with Archbishop Howard.

Target Sport Campers Shoot Trap at Camp Howard

Specialty campers who signed up for Target Sports get to experience a variety of shooting sports for two hours a day during their week of camp.  Archery, Paintball, BB guns and Trap Shooting are the offerings this year for the camp.  The youngsters were delighted by the trap shooting today as each and every one of them learned to aim, load, and fire their 12 gauge shotgun at the moving target (clay disk).  Every student shot the target several times and had a successful outing of Trap shooting.

Leonardo Defilippis and St. Luke Productions to Present the Live Drama: Faustina

Leonardo and his wife, Patty Defilippis from Battleground, WA got their start in religious theme presentations in Beaverton, OR around 1981.  Leonardo, Patty and I have “grown up” together over the years.  I cannot tell you how proud I am of them for the wonderful work they do.

I would encourage you to become familiar with them if you are not and take advantage of this fantastic local talent.  They travel all over the world with their productions.  If you are able to send a donation their way, it would be money well spent.  I hope you will also take time to take in one of their live drama presentations.

STAR DECK is Back at Camp Howard!!!

Star Deck tower at Camp Howard is rebuilt July 2013 by Schommer and Sons Construction Company

Star Deck tower at Camp Howard is rebuilt July 2013 by Schommer and Sons Construction Company.  Pictured here is the nearly complete tower with side rails being added around the top of the platform and down the stairs.

The STAR DECK has always been a popular feature at Camp Howard with campers.  It was built in 1985 by the Knights of Columbus from Gresham.  After several years of service the tower had to be removed for safety purposes.  Sr. Krista talked to Schommer and Sons about a redesign of the tower moving the stairs to the side which would give the tower a full unobstructed floor.  The tower was redesigned and rebuilt this spring.  Special thanks to Craig Schommer, Steve Schommer and the construction crew at Schommer and Sons.
