Some 600 coaches help out with the CYO Basketball Program grades 3 – 8. They are an awesome group of people who give an awful lot of themselves to make this program happen for kids. They are all volunteers who do it from the depth of their heart. Here are a few of the coaches I came across this past weekend at the 6,7,8 grade championships:

8th Grade Boys City Championship

Highlights
St. John Fisher jumped out to a 12-point lead by the middle of the second quarter. With one minute and 30 seconds left in the first half, Archbishop Howard tied the score at 20 – 20. A back and forth battle ensued throughout the third and fourth quarters. At 2:51 left in the game score tied 38 – 38. In the end, St. John Fisher prevailed 38 – 41. Great game to both teams!
Holy Redeemer vs St. Anthony for the 8th Grade Girls CYO City BXB Championship 2015

Highlights
Two very talented teams playing at the eighth grade level. Holy Redeemer, a powerful group of young women had a slight edge over the St. Anthony seventh graders playing up at the eighth grade level but the St. Anthony team was in the game all the way forcing Holy Redeemer to bring everything they had to the contest. Holy Redeemer pulled ahead by 10 in the final two minutes of the fourth quarter.

Highlights
Two well matched teams excellent defensive skills. Game differential was not more than 5 points most of the game. A fun game to watch from beginning to end where the score was tied 33 to 33 until the last 30 seconds when St. Pius scored 2. Valley Catholic answered with their own two points and with 19 seconds left, St. Pius called a timeout. St. Pius scored with 7 seconds left and Valley could not answer at their end of the court. Great game by both teams.

CYO 6th Grade Boys BXB Championship Christ the King vs Holy Trinity
Sunday March 15, 2015 CYO 6th Grade Boys City Championship Home: Christ the King – Eric Bergeson, Mike Weaver, Geoff Boyd Away: Holy Trinity – John Lang, Bob Holthaus Q1: 17 – 3 Holy Trinity Q2: 19 – 19 Q3: 25 – 41 Holy Trinity Q4: 31 – 55 Holy Trinity FINAL Highlights Set the stage: Holy Trinity won the 2014 Championship against Our Lady of the Lake. Christ the King beat Holy Trinity in pre-season play. Christ the King finished third in 2014. Holy Trinity fans came to the game decked out in Red and white ready to cheer! HT student fans had player heads cut out of paper pasted onto sticks. Holy Trinity took decisive control of the game in the first quarter outscoring CTK 15 – 0 with 30 seconds left. Christ the King got on track in the second quarter, began grabbing rebounds, making some GREAT shots including two three pointers by Jackson Jaha. Two free throws by Jaha, with 46 seconds left in the game tied the game 19 – 19. In the third quarter, Holy Trinity went on a 20 point scoring spree, outdistancing CTK by 14 points. With 5 minutes left in the fourth quarter, Isaiah Baker fouled out of the game just as CTK ignited a comeback. Unfortunately, CTK was not able to catch up with Holy Trinity but it was a great game to watch from beginning to end. Lots of talent on both teams!

Highlights:
St. John Fisher going for their fourth championship in a row. St. Pius X trailed the entire game going ahead by three in the fourth quarter following a three point shot by Mackenzie Naro. St. John Fisher answered with a three pointer of their own, to go ahead by one! Josie Napoli (SJF) fouled out with three minutes left in the game. Lucy Menendez went out of the game after a slight collision resulting in a foul and free throws for St. Pius X. St. Pius X leads at 29-31 with 2:06 left in the game. With 5.2 seconds left in the game, Lola Talalemotu ties the game at 31 with a clutch shot under the basket!

One of the most exciting games of the day, a very close game from beginning to the end where with 1 minute left it was till anyone’s game. With an 8 point lead, late in the fourth quarter St. Clare held on to win by 4 with a score of 35 – 31.

Highlights
St. Agatha led the first three quarters by a small margin. Holy Family stayed close and tied the third quarter with less than a minute to play. As in most games, the fourth quarter was the game, both teams inspired by the final 8 minutes of play. The lead changed a few times before St. Agatha went ahead by three with 1 minute left to play. Holy Family had several opportunities to reclaim the lead including several free throws in the last 45 seconds but missed three of four. St. Agatha won 30 – 28.

Highlights
Two very similar sized teams from the same neighborhood duke it out for bragging rights. St. John Fisher jumps out to an early lead and keep the lead despite St. Clare’s attempts to narrow the gap. Thanks to SJF #45 slight height advantage and agility, SJF wins the rights this year.
