The Madeleine scored four points in the first 5 minutes of the game and held Holy Trinity scoreless until the last minute and 20 seconds when Holy Trinity scored their first hoop.  At the end of the first quarter, it was Madeleine 8 Holy Trinity 2.

As the second half opened, Holy Trinity added four more points in the first two minutes to come within two.  The height on the Holy Trinity team especially Kendra #42 was a factor under the basket and she wasn’t shy going for the rebounds.

With less than 2 minutes left in the game, Holy Trinity went ahead 19-10, holding the Madeleine to 2 free throws the second quarter of the game.

The third quarter, after pep talks by both coaches, saw both teams with a renewed surge of energy.  Holy Trinity finished the quarter with 13 new points and Madeleine 2 for a quarter ending score of 32 – 14 Holy Trinity.

The Holy Trinity defense forced Madeleine to take perimeter shots while the Holy Trinity team was able to break through for inside shots and most often obtain the rebound for the second and third try.  When Madeleine did get it to the inside they were not able to convert.  This write believes that the height factor for next year’s sixth grade girls will make a big difference!

Game Final: Holy Trinity 42, Madeleine 17

4th Grade Boys Championships

All Saints – Coaches: Ron DePalma & Peter Metz

Emmett, Ryan, Lucas, Samson, Garrett, Alonzo, Boden, Aidan, Peter

St. Cecilia – Coaches: Mark Adams, Benjamin Carrington & Jason Hawthorne

Chase, Brayden, Kristian, Dax, Cole, Jared, Joshua, Kaiden

All Saints had the advantage of their buckets going through the hoop.  St. Cecilia could not buy a basket in the first half which ended with a score of 19-6 All Saints.

With 1:22 left in the third quarter, St. Cecilia began to turn on the burners and outscored All Saints for the quarter 12 – 11 with a score of 30 – 18 All Saints at the end of three.

With a very exciting fourth quarter and a lot of good play on both teams, All Saints maintained a lead of four points. The consistent ball handling and shooting of Lucas DePalma was too much for the St. Cecilia team to overcome in four quarters.

Great game and the game of the day for the CYO Championships!  Good job to both teams!

Game Highlights:

St. Cecilia jumped out to a quick lead and Cathedral, five time defending CYO Championship team quickly tied it up at 8-8.  Cathedral began pouring it to St. Cecilia and a timeout was called at 20 – 10 Cathedral.  Not satisfied with a 10 point lead, Cathedral let St. Cecilia back into the game closing in at 18 – 24 Cathedral. A missed spike by St. Cecilia went out of bounds giving Cathedral the first game 25 – 18.

Game 2 Cathedral started strong and never let St. Cecilia back into the game.  The game however was fantastic volleyball played by two teams filled with players who have developed skills to a very high level.  We will see many of them on high school teams next year without a doubt.  Congratulations to the CYO coaches who have worked with the girls over the years to develop them to this level.  A wonderful game to watch! Cathedral 25 – 16.

St. Joseph jumped to an early lead in game one and and did not look back, winning the game by 18 points.  Cathedral got on the stick in game 2 and reminded St. Joseph’s they had history at the CYO Championship tournament with an early 8-4 lead.  St. Joseph’s not willing to lay down and take it, fought back every inch of the way to a 15 – 15 tie.  Cathedral went ahead by three and St. Joseph tied it up at 22.  St. Joseph had Cathedral on the ropes at 24 – 23 with the serve. Lauren Stemple served the final ball and scored for St. Joseph and the CYO Championship.  A great game by both teams.

Both teams have high school varsity potential and we will see them playing for local high schools in the future for sure.

Game Highlights:Sixth grade volleyball is made more enjoyable to watch by the mere fact the girls have grown tall enough to spike and their skills have been developed to a point that they are doing a great job controlling the ball.  Spectators get into the game and it is a louder, more exciting age group to watch.

St. Joseph came back in game two and outscored All Saints 25 – 13.  Great serving by St. Joseph’s.

Game 3 – Al Saints came out with 2 point lead, gave up the ball and St. Joseph tied at 2-2.  A battle ensued with the score going back and forth tied at 10-10.  All Saints started to pull ahead at 13-10 when the St. Joseph team called time out.  All Saints came back and scored two more to take the tournament title 15 – 11.  It was a great game by both teams and a lot of fun to watch.

If you have ever watched much developmental volleyball, you will know the games at the lower grades are pretty much dictated by the ability to serve.  This match was no different, however, the girls kept the games  exciting for spectators.  St. Clare took the first game 25 – 23 in a very close contest.

The second game was also exciting with a lot of back and forth bumping,  But St. Clare came out to an early lead and kept it going until they were ahead 20 – 10.  Holy Trinity rallied to 13-20 then 15 – 22.  Holy Trinity kept coming back.  Both teams were a little tense at the end of the second game which also became a factor.  St. Clare took it in the end 25 – 21 in a great fourth grade match.

Both teams will be fun to watch in the coming years.

St. John Fisher 7th Girls Win the Big One!

The St. John Fisher Girls remember too well the painful loss of 2015 where they were involved in the famous 6x overtime (CYO Record) Championship game with St. Pius X.  Coming into the game this year, SJF had lost twice in regular season to Holy Family.

St. John Fisher came off the bench on fire and ran up a first quarter lead of 9-4.

With 1:15 in the second quarter, Holy Family went ahead for the first time 11-9.

The third quarter was scoreless until the final 3 minutes when Holy Family led a run on points.  St. John Fisher answered back and went ahead on two free throws by Josie Napoli with 1.3 seconds left in the quarter.

With 2:47 remaining in the game, Holy Family tied the game then went ahead on a steal.  The momentum had swung toward Holy Family and the crowd was behind them.  St. John Fisher, not a team to give it up, kept fighting and tied it back up at 17 all.  Molly Grant powered a shot through the hoop with 23 seconds left for 2 points giving SJF the advantage at 19 – 17.

FINAL: 19 – 17 St. John Fisher
