Valley Catholic 7th grade girls win second place in the CYO City Basketball Championship March 13, 2022 at Valley Catholic School.

Q1: Tough defense on both teams, no scoring until second half of the first quarter.  Christ the King was scoreless until under two minutes in the first quarter. The teams ended the quarter Valley Catholic 4, Christ the King 3

Q2: With 3 minutes left in the half, Christ the King tied the game at 6 – 6.  Christ the King gained some momentum and outscored the Valiants 10 -6 to end the half.

Q3: Intense play by both teams with little penetration toward the hoop.  A lot of athleticism on both teams with great defense closing out most scoring attempts. The Lions capitalized on the Valiants endless turnovers. End of quarter Christ the King 15, Valley Catholic 10.

Q4: The Valiants had a momentum burst and brought the game within 3 points.  Turnovers vexed them throughout the game and end of game fouling sent the Lions to the charity line to add points.  Two very balanced teams the Lions were victorious today 22 – 14. FINAL

CYO 5th GRADE CHAMPIONSHIP BASKETBALL

The game between these two teams was tied at the end of the first quarter 10 – 10 and close as the game went into half time.

An exciting game with St. Pius X staying close enough to keep the game interesting against a very good shooting St. Anthony that maintained a 10 point margin most of the second half.  Today, St. Anthony had the upper hand and ended the game with a  64 – 53 final score.

St. Pius X and Holy Redeemer split games during the season with each team taking a game from the other. 

Quarter 1: Tough play for both teams St. Pius X lead at the end of one 7 – 2.

Quarter 2 – 13 – 12 Holy Redeemer

Quarter 3 – St. Pius X took the lead with the first shot of the third quarter and held on to the lead by one point at the end 17 – 16.

Quarter 4 – The Game!  With 3:27 left in the fourth quarter, the score remained 17 – 16 St. Pius X.  Neither team could buy a basket. The crowd was loud and supportive, the girls fought ferociously.  Finally, Holy Redeemer went to the charity line and sunk two to go ahead by one point. With 2:49 left St. Pius shot a three pointer and went ahead by two points 20 – 18.  Holy Redeemer stole the ball, made a lay up and tied the game 20-20 with under two minutes in the game.

St. Pius X passed the ball around on their next possession and shot a 20 footer to go ahead again 22 – 20.

Final St. Pius X 23 – Holy Redeemer 20 in what was the best game of the tournament thus far!

First Quarter:

St. Pius X came out with a strong start to hold Holy Trinity 17 – 3.

Second Quarter: Holy Trinity roared back scoring 13 points to St. Pius X’s 6 points leaving a half time score of 23 – 16 St. Pius X.

Third Quarter: Holy Trinity made a comeback 29 – 26

Final 39 – 33 St. Pius X

Valley Catholic 4th Grade Boys team brings home second place in the 2020 CYO City Basketball Championship.

First Half: Valley Catholic dominated with a sizeable lead.  Going into the halftime, Our Lady of the lake closed the gap and nearly tied it 11 to 12 Valley Catholic.

Second Half: Our Lady of the Lake took the lead by one with 6 minutes left in the third quarter.  The lead changed back and forth and with 6 seconds left in the quarter, Valley Catholic took a one point lead 22 to 21.

The fourth quarter featured a score fest between the two teams with the score changing hands more than half a dozen times before Our Lady of the Lake pulled ahead by three with 1:07 left in the game. Our Lady of the Lake iced the cake with another bucket with 20 seconds on the clock securing a 5 point lead and a game ending score of  34 – 28 with an added charity shot with 10 seconds left.  A great game between the two teams that kept the spectators on the edge of their seats throughout.

St. Pius X 4th Grade Girls win the gold in the 2022 CYO City Basketball Championships

First Quarter:

Valley Catholic dominated the first quarter with a score of 5 to 0.

Second Quarter:

St. Pius X started a comeback scoring 4 points and Valley Catholic added 2 for a halftime score of 7 – 4 Valley Catholic

Third Quarter:

Both teams scrambled for points toward the end of the third quarter adding 6 points apiece for a quarter ending 13 – 10 Valley Catholic lead.

Fourth Quarter:

Fourth Quarter:  “The Game”

Three minutes into the game, St. Pius X took the lead, 12 – 11 beginning a firestorm of excitement and activity.  The game ended with a score of St. Pius X 14 and Valley Catholic 13.

Game Highlights:

            St. Therese came out to the early lead.  In the second quarter, the Madeleine went ahead and continued to build a lead and didn’t stop.

            The Madeleine team played in the championships the last 3 years and came in second.  This year, their fourth year, they won the championship!  Congratulations to both teams for having made it to the big dance!

Game Highlights:

  • With 2:41 left in the second quarter, All Saints tied the score 16 – 16.
  • After trailing most of the third quarter, St. John Fisher brings it within one in the final quarter with 3:53 left to play.
  • With 26 seconds left in the game, St. John Fisher’s Lilly tied the game at 36-36 with a swisher from 12’ out.  Lilly fouled out shortly after giving All Saints’ Shannon two charity tries with 1.6 seconds left on the clock.  She missed both shots taking the game into a 2:00 overtime.
  • All Saints 32, Shannon, got the tip, took a shot, missed it, followed up and scored 2.
  • St. John Fisher lost the ball on their possession to a travel but rebounded from All Saints failing to score.  All Saints turned the ball over to St. John fisher with 50 seconds left. St. John Fisher’s Cayton sunk a 3 pointer to go ahead by one with 28 seconds on the clock!
  • With 5.3 seconds on the clock, the ball went to St. John Fisher.  The Cardinals were able to hold off All Saints for 5 seconds to win the game.  
  • One of the best games in the tournament, both teams kept it very close and exciting.
  • CYO wishes the young women the very best as they move on to high school next year!

Game Highlights:

With 3:21 left in the game, St. Anthony took the lead for the first time in the game with a beautifully executed assist from Rafael to Jacob 43 – 42.  

A flurry of back and forth scoring brought the game to 45 – 50 Pius X with just under 2 minutes to go.

The final score with a 13 point margin was not reflective of the game in total.  Well played by both teams.

Game Highlights:

  • Holy Redeemer lead the first half comfortably.  With two minutes left in the third quarter, St. Pius X tied the score at 17 – 17.
  • Fourth Quarter: Holy Redeemer jumped out to a four point lead.  With six minutes left in the quarter, St Pius X sunk one of two free throws then missed to crucial shots from the rebound.
  • Holy Redeemer added a free throw point and Yasmin, added two points under the basket to advance 26 – 18.  
  • St. Pius X got cold as fast as they got hot with 5 minutes left in the fourth quarter. Ava added two points to bring St. Pius back to the game.  Gabby added two more on a breakaway to bring St. Pius within 4 points!  Hot again!
  • With 47 seconds, St. Pius X #50, Olivia missed a free throw but Audrey rebounded and put it up for two to bring the game within 2.
  • Yasmin went to the line for Holy Redeemer with 38 seconds left and missed both shots. Pius X pounded down the floor had two opportunities to tie but the ball bounced off the rim.
  • Holy Redeemer went to the line again as Sophia prepped for 1 and 1.  Sunk 1 to lead by three.  Time out St. Pius X, 10.1 seconds left in the game.
  • With a few seconds left, St. Pius #15, Mia, shot and made a three pointer.  The crowd went crazy!  Tied the game!  Holy Redeemer’s #3 was fouled and got two shots. Sunk one, 30 – 29 Redeemer. Time out St. Pius X one second left!
  • St. Pius X inbounded with one second left, the ball went out of bounds and that was all she wrote!
  • A terrific game by both teams!  By far the best of the tournament games thus far!
