Why Are there so few Accredited Camps in Oregon?

Answer:  Because it is a lot of work to go through to become accredited and stay accredited.  Why does Camp Howard go through the effort of being an accredited camp?  Answer: because it helps tremendously to maintain a level of safety at the camp.  Camp Howard holds itself to the highest standards in camping with the American Camping Association.  Camps are accredited every three years or whenever the camp has a new Camp Director.

Facility Manager, Karen von Borstel and Camp Howard Summer Program Director, Bill Fogarty, work on the preparation for the American Camping Association Accreditation which will take place this summer.

Can you believe this?  Second day of Spring 2012 at Camp Howard?  Picture this…Outdoor School staff is in training at the camp and it starts snowing hard.  Power went out yesterday afternoon and it gets cold up there as you can imagine with no power.  Staff moved over to Camp Namanu until PGE got the power back on.  Karen (Camp Howard Facility Manager) drove out and picked up the cooks to bring them to camp to fix breakfast for the staff this morning.  She spent yesterday afternoon and this morning plowing the snow off the roads and helping staff get cars unstuck.

Camp Howard has had two dumps of snow these past two weeks receiving 8″ in each event.  Spring vacation is just around the corner and I was hoping for a little golf weather.  I guess I should be grateful we got through the basketball tournament with no snow! Camp Howard Campers, Can You Name This Location?

If you are a true Camp Howard Camper you will be able to name this famous location at camp.  What’s going on here?  This room is in the process of being renovated.  Each year we try to take on a “Fall” project that usually includes painting.  During the winter we try to improve the inside of an area.  I will be showing the changes to this location in about two weeks.  I want you to know “It is looking GREAT!” – Let’s hear some answers in the comment section…

At the end of every summer camping season, a few staff are asked to stay on and help with a camp improvement project.  It is generally a painting project from the maintenance cycle that keeps the buildings in good repair.  This years project was staining and trimming out the Dining hall and two of the staff cabins.

If You Can’t Take the Heat, Get Out of the Pool!

This summer, our campers at Camp Howard will be treated to a wonderful improvement at the Camp.  We are in the process of putting a heating system into the pool!  This has been the most desired change called for by the youth who have attended the camp during the past 15 years that I have been Director.  There were so many needs at the camp in my early years that the pool was unfortunately not one of the top 5 that we could address until this year.  I am so happy that we will be able to make this positive change and I cannot wait for the campers to enjoy the significant improvement!
