Art Camp with Joanne Kollman proves inspiring and productive for youth artists

Joanne Kollman, a local artist known for her portrait paintings has teamed up with CYO/Camp Howard to offer a week long art camp at the convent of the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon.

The camp begins at 9:00 in the morning and finishes at 4:00 daily giving the youngsters the opportunity to really get into art all day.  It has been a great start to the week and the kids are doing an awesome job!

The camp will delve into portrait work, architecture, nature and relate to the elements of art including value, color, shape, space, texture, line.

Keeping up with Camp Howard

Karen (Camp Howard Facility Manager) and I took a tour of Camp Howard this past week and I have to tell you…doesn’t matter when you go up there, the scenes are always different! The Bull Run River lies between Camp Howard and the magnificent view of the Bull Run Reservoir. Mt. Hood is perched above and behind the hills where a partial view is still stunning. On this day, a thick bed of opaque clouds filled the valley between the camp and the other side of the gorge holding the Bull Run River. It was spectacular!

We toured around the camp where she and her trusty helper, Larry Wood have been cleaning up from the fuel reduction project at Camp by the Oregon Dept. of Forestry this past summer which completes 3 summers of work on fuel reduction. What is fuel reduction? It is the removal of the flammable brush under the forest that is the real culprit in the case of a fire. This flammable material helps fuel the fire and destroy the trees.

The result of this process has been a cleaner camp, made it possible to continue the process of cleaning up the forest floor, and increased the ability of the camp to fight a forest fire.

The winter improvement project this year is the renovation of the interior of the Greenwood cabins. We did the interiors of Fircrest cabins last winter so it is time for Greenwood! Little girls up to age 10 stay in Fircrest and little boys of the same age stay in the Greenwood cabins. The little boys will be happy to come to camp next summer and see the improvements made. What are we doing?

All of the walls in the cabin are being repainted and then the bunks are getting a nice enamel coat. The light fixture covers are being replaced which will give the rooms a brighter cleaner look. Mirrors will be installed on the walls. Karen is taking all of the windows out of all the cabins, removing the paint, removing the window pane, putting new windows in if necessary, glazing the windows, priming the wood then putting a coat of enamel on the windows and finally painting the interior of the door.

The Fircrest and Greenwood cabins are the original 12 cabins at Camp Howard. I expect we will get many more years out of the cabins due to the good work done by the staff on the buildings. Last year, Bill Fogarty who runs the camps summer activity programs, stayed on for a few weeks and led a paint crew in staining and trimming the exteriors of the cabins.

Taking Some Time for Maintenance at Camp Howard

Moments in between summer camp and camp rentals gives camp staff the opportunity to work on maintenance and repairs.  After a heavy load of summer campers, the camp needs some time to rebound.

A few summer staff stay on to help with maintenance and repairs.  Window washing, paint touch ups, floor polishing and a variety of projects that need attention.

Winter and Spring projects will e identified for camp improvements.  Fircrest cabin interiors were repainted, light fixtures replaced, bunks painted, ceilings sealed, caulked and painted, windows removed, cleaned, recalled, painted and hardware updated last winter.  The improvements were a delight for the young girls who stay in Fircrest each summer.  They loved the changes.  Greenwood Unit is scheduled for the same work this winter.

All of the cabins were inspected yesterday and issues identified that need addressed.  Keeping the cabins in great shape for campers is important to the administration of the camp.

Stay tuned for some articles on the Champions of Faith Benefit Dinner and learn about how that event helps CYO and Camp Howard activities.

Camp Howard Summer Camping Season 2013 – It’s in the Book!

It’s in the book!  Camp Howard summer camping season has come to an end and the last busses rolled out of camp after about 75 trips back and forth to camp this summer!  The camp set a camper record of 1535 campers.  Can you believe 23,025 meals were served during the six week run?

The camping season was overall a very successful season with the kids having a spectacular time at Camp.

Summer Program Director, Bill Fogarty and the CYO staff will work this fall on planning camp 2014.

The Camp Howard 60th Anniversary was a great success on Saturday July 20th with great food, tours of the camp, visiting and the Country band “Countrified” on Horton Field at Camp Howard. Over 350 people attended the event and visited the iconic youth camp which has provided a rite of passage for youth in the Pacific Northwest.

Brothers, Mark and Ron Mobley, founders of the band “Countrified” were classmates of Karen and Sister Krista von Borstel in North Central Oregon. The Mobley boys and their band were a tremendous hit at Camp Howard among the attendees at the event.

Camp Howard at 60

Camp Howard has gone through a variety of changes over the years which is natural.  Going back to revisit the roots will be part of the celebration this Saturday as the CYO/Camp Howard staff and Friends of Camp Howard mark the moment in time.

Let us know if you can identify any of the campers in the photo below with Archbishop Howard.

Target Sport Campers Shoot Trap at Camp Howard

Specialty campers who signed up for Target Sports get to experience a variety of shooting sports for two hours a day during their week of camp.  Archery, Paintball, BB guns and Trap Shooting are the offerings this year for the camp.  The youngsters were delighted by the trap shooting today as each and every one of them learned to aim, load, and fire their 12 gauge shotgun at the moving target (clay disk).  Every student shot the target several times and had a successful outing of Trap shooting.

Camp Howard Target Sport Director, JP Fogarty (left) and Sister Krista von Borstel, (not pictured) team taught the class today.

STAR DECK is Back at Camp Howard!!!

Star Deck tower at Camp Howard is rebuilt July 2013 by Schommer and Sons Construction Company

Star Deck tower at Camp Howard is rebuilt July 2013 by Schommer and Sons Construction Company.  Pictured here is the nearly complete tower with side rails being added around the top of the platform and down the stairs.

The STAR DECK has always been a popular feature at Camp Howard with campers.  It was built in 1985 by the Knights of Columbus from Gresham.  After several years of service the tower had to be removed for safety purposes.  Sr. Krista talked to Schommer and Sons about a redesign of the tower moving the stairs to the side which would give the tower a full unobstructed floor.  The tower was redesigned and rebuilt this spring.  Special thanks to Craig Schommer, Steve Schommer and the construction crew at Schommer and Sons.
